How much does wedding photography cost?

Jan 04, 2019

On average wedding photography in the UK costs £650. However, this is ultimately influenced by a variety of different factors such as those outlined below. So it is always best to discuss price estimates with your pro directly to receive an accurate estimate for your wedding photos.

There are a variety of factors that will go into choosing the right wedding photographer. To find out what you need to consider have a read through these top tips below.

Timing of Your Wedding
If your wedding is coming up soon, you’ll likely face a last-minute charge from your wedding photographer. Weddings on the weekend will cost more than weddings during the week.

The length of your wedding will contribute to the cost of your wedding photography. If you only need a photographer for your ceremony, you will pay less than if you need a photographer for an entire day. Getting ready, a ceremony, and a reception takes up more of a photographer’s time and thus will cost more.

Location of Your Wedding

Wedding photographers in central London charge more than those in other parts of the UK. If you are having your wedding photos taken somewhere that requires a permit, you will need to pay to obtain a permit.

Printing of Photos
If you’re looking for digital photos only, you’ll pay less than if you want multiple printed albums and framed photos. Your wedding photographer will likely have connections with printers and print designers, so they may be able to offer you a lower price than if you try to find a printer on your own. Printed photos and albums are a great way to remember your wedding forever, so we recommend going this route.

The time you need a wedding photographer for will depend on your wedding day and plans for the day. When you are submitting your request for wedding photography, you can select the elements of your wedding that you need the photographer for. They will base their bid on your selections, and you can confirm the details with your photographer later in the process.

In terms of editing and delivery of your wedding photos, your wedding photographer will need at least a week or two after your big day to finish your photos. They will likely edit a selection of your photos and provide them to you in a private online album. From there, you will likely be able to choose the photos you love the most and have them printed or turned into an album.

Location of The Venue

Your wedding photographer will take photos at your chosen wedding venue. We recommend visiting your wedding venue with your photographer ahead of time so that you can get a feel for the space and take some test shots with your photographer.

Depending on your wedding photographer’s home location, they may request that you cover some of their travel expenses to your wedding venue. This is something normal, and if you feel strongly about a photographer, you should seriously consider it. Your wedding only happens once, after all, so it’s important that your photos be as beautiful and memorable as possible.

Most wedding photographers offer different packages to fit your budget. These packages will include varying levels of service, ranging from the most basic to the most luxurious wedding photography service.

Basic Packages (£)
Basic wedding photography packages generally include the photography of your wedding ceremony and digital copies of your photos.

Basic packages include a shorter amount of time with your photographer, and may not include meetings before the wedding to prepare.

At this price level, most photographers will offer a few edited photos or a large number of unedited photos. If you have experience with photo editing and feel comfortable editing your own photos, this might be the right approach for you.

Midrange Packages (££)
Midrange wedding photography packages usually include the photography of your wedding ceremony and reception. The copies of photos included will vary depending on your photographer, but will often include digital copies of edited photos.

At this price level, your photographer will likely photograph your wedding ceremony and reception. They will also likely offer meetings ahead of your wedding and a free consultation to get a better feel for their services.

Midrange wedding photography packages include a larger amount of edited photos than the basic price level. These photography packages often include printed copies of your photos and a private online gallery you can order extra prints from.

Luxury Packages (£££)

Luxury wedding photography packages offer the highest level of service. This includes photographing each part of your wedding, from getting ready to the last goodbyes at the end of the night.

Luxury packages include a longer time with your wedding photographer, and they will capture every bit of your wedding day. They may even throw in an engagement photo shoot at a discounted price. At this price level, your wedding photographer will be more available to meet with you before your wedding.

At this price level, your photographer will likely include both digital and physical prints of your wedding. They may also gift you a luxury USB key with your photos on it. Many luxury wedding photography packages include a pair of printed albums for your in-laws.

Most wedding photographers offer add-ons that you can choose to personalize your wedding photography package. These add-ons include more edited photos, prints of your photos, wedding albums, and more. When you receive a bid from a wedding photographer, many will list these add-ons in their bid. If they don’t, feel free to reach out and ask them about any add-ons they offer. You want your wedding photos and memories of your special day to be as bespoke as possible, after all.

As with most services, a photographer’s experience will play a part in how much your wedding photography costs. Less experienced photographers may offer their services at a lower rate, as they are looking to build their portfolio and build their skills in practical settings. On the other hand, more experienced and expert photographers will charge a fair bit more for their skills.

The key is finding a balance between skill and price. You don’t want to jump at a low price only to have subpar photos of your wedding for the rest of your life. But you also shouldn’t spend your entire budget on wedding photography to hire a famous or highly sought after photographer.

After all, even the greatest photographers had to start somewhere. If you love the way a photographer’s photos look and they’re offering a price that works for you, go with your gut and click “hire”.

The format of your wedding photos will depend on your preferences. If you want to share them on social media but don’t care to hang your photos up around your home, go the digital route. On the other hand, if you want your photos to last for generations to come, you’ll want to splurge on a printed wedding album and plenty of prints.

Popular wedding photo formats include:

  • Removable media (CD/DVD/USB)
  • Online or digital proofs
  • Physical proofs and prints
  • Album

Most wedding photographers will provide you with an online gallery where you can choose the prints you want and have them printed at a reasonable rate. This is usually in addition to digital copies of your photos for social media and online uses. Before hiring a photographer, ask them about their printing process and the formats they offer.

Other considerations

Most photographers recommend that you put aside 5% of the total cost of your wedding for your wedding photos. This means that if your wedding costs a total of £25,000, you should spend around £1,250 on your wedding photography. Photography is just one of the many elements that go into your wedding, so it’s important not to go overboard when it comes to price.

Before hiring a wedding photographer, you should meet up with them for a consultation. Most photographers offer free consultations, as they know that hiring a photographer is a huge decision to make.

When you receive bids on Bidvine, be sure to ask your photographers to meet for a cup of tea to discuss your options and see if you get on well with each other. It’s important that you have a good rapport with your photographer, as they will be capturing one of the biggest days of your life.

In the end, your wedding photos will preserve the memory of your wedding for years to come.

Choosing a wedding photographer is not a decision that should be purely based on price, as there are many other bits and bobs that go into your wedding photos.

If you connect with a photographer’s portfolio and get on well with them, then they’re probably the best photographer for you. On the flip side, if you love a photographer’s portfolio and they’re offering you a great price but you can’t stand them, don’t hire them. Like we said earlier, you need to have a good rapport with your photographer if you want natural and relaxed photos of your wedding day.

I got married in September and I hate getting my photo taken! However from first meeting John he made me feel at ease. He showed me some of his previous work and let me decide how my days photography would go. I had prompt replies everytime I made contact about arrangements. On the day John showed up right on time to photograph myself and my mother and bridesmaid getting ready, also the guests arriving. Excellent pictures during the ceremony and after without being to obvious which meant I felt relaxed. I was so pleased when I received my album, perfect images and the whole package was more than reasonably priced. I couldn't fault this photographer and would recommend him to everyone (infact I have) , not just for weddings but for any occasion. 10/10
