About Xavier Clarke

Despite the ease of instant images shot on a smartphone, it takes a true professional with the right skills and the best equipment (as well as abundant patience!) to create striking and meaningful images. My passion for photography started when I was 12 and eventually nurtured my love for working behind the camera into a full-time career. I started XC PhotographyUK Ltd., and specialise in music, events and portraits. This career holds plenty of rewards – from the people I meet to the places I go to the work I’m proud to call mine. I’ve had some pretty amazing experiences as a professional photographer and have had the chance to shoot some of my heroes from TV and music. Over the years, some of the assignments I’ve had the pleasure of being involved with include promo, events, portraits, live music, product shoots and more. I place a major emphasis on understanding the aims of every client on every project – whether it’s a straightforward commercial shoot or an all-day event with a specific brief. My client roster includes companies like Bournemouth University, Glug, Events, Gomez (the Band), BBC Radio 1Xtra,Brighton Festival, BN1 Magazine, Brighton Source, Lighthouse, Miss Pin Up UK, Miss Pin Up International, Brighton Fringe, The Pretend Men, Clock Tower Sanctuary, Peter Kyle MP, Annika Brown, Funk the Format, Betty Lou Vintage, Brighton & Hove Guitar Lessons & more. After the shoot, I also do a soft edit so clients have a private gallery to choose images for removal before distribution, or for them to select their final image(s). I will then do a final edit and update the gallery and also create digital copies for sharing on social media. I also specialise in low light/event photography, and I use up to three cameras at events using natural lighting as much as possible (flash when required). My goal is to maintain the vibrancy and atmosphere of the event while ensuring no special moment is ever missed. Having worked in a variety of industries, from running pub/restaurants to being a data analyst and IT/Software support specialist, my versatile background means that I’m always prepared and will do what it takes to match expectations. Every role I’ve worked in was a different opportunity to use my skills and smarts to find the ideal solution without compromising on a great customer experience. Beyond my technical expertise, I’m detail-oriented, empathetic and strive to create an enjoyable experience for my clients while ensuring impressive results. My rates are very competitive and I’m open to offering discounts, especially for portraits. To discuss more about what you have in mind and for pricing details, please do get in touch for a detailed chat.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I am not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either! My fees include my time and kit at the shoot. I also post process and "soft edit" the images for styling so you can then make your selection, I will do a final edit abnd send over the final images.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Depending on time scales, I do my best to meet with a client first to get to know them, if it is for a wedding, it is very important that you are both comfortable with each other. For Musicians, I like to have a listen to their music and watch them live so I can get a better understanding of who they are. With all my clients I will discuss ideas, locations etc for the shoot. I will also propose concept based on what was discsse as well as being able to provide further services such as hair and makeup
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I have been taking photographs for nearly 40 years, but before I became professional, I have worked in a variety of roles from running bars and restaurants to IT/Network support I have also been a data analyst for government agencies as well as working as tech crew for a theatre. All of these roles gave me the opportunity to deal with all sorts of people and it is the same with photography, one day I could be surrounded by brain surgeons, actors, sales people, beauticians and I have to be able to communicate with all of them! I have trained myself in photography over the years and I have built my own style and brand, I constantly am learning and training on how to improve on my work!
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Check their body of work, try to have a chat with them. They may not be great sales people, but they are probably very good at what you need them to do. be wary of someone who promises a lot for less, they are normally either beginners (which is no problem, everyone has to start somewhere!), or will add costs later on.
What questions should customer have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
There is no uc thing as a stupid question, o if you want to know anything, just ask, though some things will automatically be a no, including: Will you do this cheaper? Would you like the exposure? Can you photograph in the cold? Are you feeling confident in what you are doing?
What are some good examples of past customers?
I have worked with a wode range of clients from Individuals, Local Businesses, Festivals, to Actors, Muti National Corporations and a number of musicians. Clients have included: B.A. Amazon, Poket Gamer, Gomez (the band), Brighton and Hove Guitar Lessons, Miss Pin Up UK/International, Glug, Brighton Festival, Lighthouse, Bournemouth University, LSE, Funk the Family/Format, BN1 Magazine, Brighton Source & many more!
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
I am currently working on a personal photography project that is taking a couple of years, but that is due to time and travel! Regarding a last shoot, I have been working with my portable studio and traveling to London with lights, camera, backdrop and frame. From arrival to setting up lights and backdrop, to finishing is a minimum an hour, I can also edit images there and then too.
How did you first get into this line of work?
Completely by accident, I was at a festival with my first DSLR and I was asked if I could send over a couple of images for them to promote for next year (several years ago now!!), I then got a glowing review of my work from them, I decided to try some more and since then I have worked hard and struggled but pushed through and I have manged to capture (with my camera!!), some of my heroes in TV an music as well as some fascinating people. Each and everyone has an interesting story to tell! I have since photographed: Suede, The Happy Mondays, Paul Wella, Band of Skulls, Bam Margera, Sylvester McCoy, Goldie, Soul II Soul, Divine Comedy along with Michael Eklund, Chillie Gonzales, Neneh Cherry and many others too!
