About Catrin Russ, Pianist and Teacher

Making music has always been central to my life whether it is singing in choirs, playing in orchestras, teaching classroom music or simply playing the piano to relax after a busy day. I have sung all my life starting in my church choir in Cardiff and leading up to singing on several CDs with various choirs. I have directed choirs and amateur dramatic groups, working with adults of all ages and abilities, and conducted groups of school children in brass groups, swing band, orchestra, pop choir and even a steel band! My piano playing has been one of the anchors in my life. I started having lessons when I was 7 years old and I’m still learning today through my students! As a secondary school music teacher, the piano was a staple for lessons whether it was playing for class singing or accompanying GCSE and A level students for exams; it was a vital part of my life. I joined Bidvine in order to offer my services to you as a piano and music theory teacher if learning the piano is something you’ve always wanted to do or if you’re thinking of taking it up again after a dry period. I began teaching the piano over 30 years ago before taking my PGCE and going into classroom music teaching. All the students I have entered for ABRSM exams have passed, several with merits or distinctions. I have also recently participated in an ABRSM examiner’s course which gave me some valuable insight and has influenced my lessons with students. I recently resigned from secondary school teaching in order to spend more time on my individual piano and music theory students, in a less stressful atmosphere! Many of my current students are adults who have taken up the piano to help keep their brains active and to provide a new challenge in their lives. As your piano teacher, through humour and encouragement, I would like to make sure that you learn at a comfortable pace whilst making significant progress. One of my particular strengths is that I get on with people of all ages as you can see from my reviews. I am also experienced with working with people with special educational needs. I have several students who are on the autistic spectrum and have developed a way of teaching them that can maximise their potential through a patient and calm approach. As most of my teaching is online at the moment, I like to send recordings of backing tracks that I have made to my students for them to play along to. It makes such a different and is really good practice in playing with somebody else whilst concentrating on your own part. It also sounds much more elaborate especially when you have just started to learn and are playing with a limited number of notes! I also write and adapt my own music to suit my students' needs, whether it's adding fingering to a tricky passage, or simplifying a well known melody for somebody who has just started to learn to play. To get started and to see if we are the right fit, I offer a free taster session as my first lesson to see if you like my teaching style ... and the piano, and if you refer another student to me, you get a free lesson. Let’s connect and I look forward to being your teacher and helping you build an appreciation for music. Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon!

Piano Lessons
Team B.'s review on Sep 19, 2020

(This review was taken via Bidvine) Catrin has been helping me to recover my piano skills after 50 years of not playing at all during my nursing career, and starting from scratch all over again. She has been enormously patient and supportive as my ageing fingers, brain and eyesight have sluggishly recalled past skills, musical notes and terms. I would certainly recommend Catrin to anyone wanting else of mature years who wants to learn to play the piano. -Alison L.

Eric L.'s review on Sep 07, 2020

Catrin is super friendly, very patient and has an encouraging teaching style that is refreshingly different from the stiff, inflexible teaching that I remember having as a child. For my 8yo son, I was determined to find a teacher who could nurture and develop his passion for music, and Catrin is brilliant at not only understanding him but also encouraging him and bringing out that passion - both during the lessons and in the time between. I was sufficiently impressed that I have now joined my son in having weekly lessons, which I do for fun and personal enjoyment. We've had to resort to lessons over FaceTime during lockdown but the quality and value of our lessons has not suffered. We feel that we're achieving the appropriate rate of progress, and more importantly, enjoying our journey into music and learning to play the piano.

Graham M.'s review on Sep 06, 2020

I am a late starter as a piano learner and I have been working with Catrin for two years. She is friendly and encouraging, but pushes you to achieve the highest standard you can by being attentive to what you have time to do during the week and seeking to find pieces of music that will appeal to you. She gives clear advice as to how to tackle new pieces and is patient with you when you find tasks and techniques challenging. I have been encouraged to persevere because of her supportive approach and the fact that she expects you to do well. Her advice as to how long and how to practise has been most helpful in establishing a routine to fit around my work schedule. I feel that I am making progress and fully appreciate that practice is essential.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
My fee for teaching the piano and general music theory is £30 per hour. If I come to you to deliver the lesson, I will also add travel expenses at 45p per mile. However, I guess in the present climate, most lessons will be online.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
In your first piano lesson, I will ask you a few general questions eg what type of music do you like, have you ever learned to play an instrument before, if so what, for how long etc. I will then explain the layout of your piano or keyboard and explain what the buttons do (in the case of a keyboard or electric piano). I will have suggested a teaching book that I will expect you to have acquired by the first time that we meet and will use this as the basis for lessons, diverting from it when necessary to insert music you particularly want to learn to play.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Anyone can learn to play the piano no matter what age. I have experience in teaching people from 8 to 80 and whilst my teaching style differs to appeal to each age group and personality, everyone nevertheless enjoys the lessons and progresses at their own level.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Personality is very important - you need to get on well with your teacher. Playing an instrument is a very personal activity and students often feel shy to play in front of me after they have been practising all week. I always explain that I am not there to point out every mistake but to spot general technical problems which will help them to make progress in their own time and manner. As our relationship grows, this reticence soon lessens and I often encourage the playing of piano duets where I play along with my student - it's really great fun!
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
What is the name of the teaching book I should get and where can I get it from? Will I be able to play by this time next year?
What are some good examples of past customers?
My best students are those who practice for a short time every day during the week between lessons so that they make progress rapidly and therefore start to enjoy playing more quickly. Naturally, they need to be committed to learning to play the piano because it is not easy and takes effort - it doesn't happen overnight but with your effort and my perseverance, you will make it.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
One of my favourite students is a lady in her 80s who has never played the piano before. She has been learning for about 2 months (not counting lockdown!) and her progress has been remarkable. She loves playing and enjoys the challenge that it provides, keeping her mind active.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I have played the piano since I was 7 and then studied Music at university. After that I started teaching Music in secondary schools where my piano playing skills were always called upon to accompany GCSE and A level students for exams, for concerts and generally in lessons. I currently play the organ/piano in church, run a benefice choir and direct a local amateur dramatic society for which I play the piano for all rehearsals and for the performances.
