About Rory Drums

Hi, I’m Rory and I play the drums - I’ve been playing professionally for the past 20 years, and have been teaching for more than 10 of those. As well as working with dozens of bands and artists in the studio and around hundreds of venues in the UK and Ireland, I have a wealth of teaching experience having been the senior drum tutor at the Institute of Contemporary Music in Belfast. While there I gained a Teaching Licentiate through RockSchool and have guided numerous students through their grades. I’ve also taught lessons in schools, given music workshops and clinics, and was a music facilitator in a prison in Northern Ireland (so I have plenty of experience in approaching drums and how to teach from different angles). In terms of my style, I’m definitely a rock fan but love everything from bluegrass to jazz to funk to soul to ska to electro… You can see where this is going. I have “big ears”, as drummers like to say. Favourite drummers would include John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Dave Grohl, Joe Morello, Papa Jo Jones, Jim Keltner to name a very small selection. As well as teaching I’m currently hitting the tubs for London noise-niks Struggles With Syntax, as well as working on some new projects with some musical friends.

Drum Lessons
Michael M.'s review on Oct 09, 2020

Rory worked at ICM, Belfast from 2005 to 2013,as Head Drum Tutor teaching large numbers of students, many achieving distinction in grades (1 to 8). Some went on to university . He managed other tutors and contributed to the school management. Rory was enthusiastic, helping students to achieve their goals. Rory also devised, arranged and led clinics for drummers and for the full range of band instrumentation. These events were always popular and increased sales at the school, driving up student numbers. Furthermore, Rory was and is a skilled recording engineer and producer and worked with young bands at the institute as well other outside organisations including a local church, where he recorded, mixed and produced a Christmas CD, of the highest quality. This included liaising with the customer regularly and delivering the finished product on time. Rory was highly professional in his dealings with students and parents, being confident in talking to people of all levels and was liked by fellow tutors. He was never late for lessons and rarely missed a day with illness. He is still, many years on, fondly remembered by me and his students who continue to pursue their passions in music.

Drum Lessons
Eileen C.'s review on Aug 28, 2020

The lessons are tailor-made for me depending on my musical interest and my play level. As an absolute beginner, we are covering basic techniques including grips, rudiments, grooves, accents, etc. And for fun, I am learning all the elements to build towards playing 'You Oughta Know' by Alanis Morissette. Rory is not just an experienced drummer, but an experienced teacher as well. He encourages me to work on difficult techniques and at the same time helps me to break them down into more manageable exercises so I can build towards it without losing interest. I would highly recommend him as a drumming teacher at all levels for all drumming styles.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
All pricing can be found at at my website. There are offers and incentives available for both online and face-to-face students.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Typically it's about making contact and seeing what path will work best with the student. For online lessons I offer a free 15 minute consultation - this helps ensure both parties can communicate effectively, and decide on what the lessons will cover. For face-to-face students I typically offer a half-price first lesson, this allows me to meet the student, get an idea of their playing level, and decide with the student what to work on.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
As well as 20+ years of performance experience I have more than 10 years of teaching experience in a variety of locations including homes, schools, and institutions. Additionally I hold a Licentiate in Music Teaching awarded by RSL.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Don't be afraid of asking as many questions as you need to know to ensure you feel comfortable with the person you're hiring. Check out their social media and website and see if you can get a feel of their personality. Some musicians are amazing on a technical basis but may not have the ability to communicate effectively with their clients, so it's about finding the person who's right for you.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Ideally the customer should have a clear idea of what they're seeking from lessons, but if not then we can work together to determine the best course forward. On a personal level it's useful for customers to ask questions about how my experience is relevant to what they hope to achieve.
What are some good examples of past customers?
ICM Belfast - A private music school in Ireland where I was head drum tutor for 8 years. Prison Arts Foundation - A Belfast based charity that placed artistic teachers and facilitators in a prison environment to work with inmates on learning and developing their skills.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I started playing drums in school aged 10, I started playing in bands when I was 16, and at the age of 23 decided I wanted to improve my abilities and pass on my knowledge to younger drummers. The school I took lessons at needed an additional teacher for the Summer and this led to an enjoyable 8 years of working for ICM Belfast.
