About Rob McDowall

So, you’re an aspiring musician – that’s great; music is more than a wonderful hobby – it can even open great career doors if you have the skills and passion. I’m Rob, a dedicated piano and music theory teacher. I have been playing for about 30 years and derive great pleasure helping my students improve their skills and progress to levels they never imagined. Along with teaching students, I also perform with various bands and have worked on musicals, in cabaret shows and as well as with comedians (the possibilities are endless!). I’ve also had the incredible privilege of performing on stage with prominent musicians like Slash (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver), The Darkness, Sheryl Crow, and many more. In terms of qualifications, I have a BA from Academy of Contemporary Music and a MA from WaterBear – The College of Music, Brighton. I have studied under renowned musicians including Brian Henry and used my time in university to expand my knowledge and become a versatile musician. For over 15 years, I have been teaching both contemporary and classical music to curious and diverse students at all levels and of all ages. Whether you’re a beginner eager to gain a grasp of the basics and make some music or you already play and want to further develop your skills or pass your exams, I can guide and encourage you to flourish and make the most of your potential. I have plenty of patience and always add a dose of humour and fun to my lessons so you stay engaged and deepen your knowledge and interest. Having performed in front of live audiences in famous venues like Shepherds Bush Empire, Brixton Academy, as well overseas venues such as The Bataclan, Camden Underworld, Paradiso and CBGB’s, I know what it takes to shake off stage fright. I will show you how to overcome any performance anxiety and play with flair. My classes can be held remotely or in-person, whatever you’re comfortable with. I’m a great motivator and love to teach students that have an appetite and aptitude for learning. If this sounds like you, please contact me for a detailed chat and we can take it from there. Thanks for reading and I look forward to becoming your music tutor!

I have a very flexible style of teaching, suited to the needs and aspirations of every individual. I don't have a pre-set curriculum unless asked to, of course! Usually each pupil describes what they want to learn and for what purpose and we build it from there. I have been a signed artist with grea

Three years ago, I learned about The Music Learning Theory from Edwin Gordon and applied it in musical instruments lessons. Thus, I have applied those audiation principles to my teaching repertoire. Audiation is the musical equivalent of thinking in language. Through the development of audiation, s
