About Niamh Owens

Online services Online Music Lesson/Supervision/Training I am a dedicated and self-motivated Music Teacher/Practitioner/Therapist and Trainer. I love having a multi-faced career. Throughout my work I have experience providing services to children and adults of all ages, social backgrounds, needs and diagnosis. I have an excellent track record providing exceptional service, devising creative, innovative and effective plans for all individuals on A 1:1 basis and in groups. HCPC Registration Number: AS16024 Full Enhanced DBS Check and Garda Vetted Online Music Lessons: I have been teaching for 8+ years ; piano, voice, ukulele, guitar, recorder, composition, improvisation, general musicianship and music theory. I adopt a student-led approach tailoring my lessons to the individual, students ranging from toddlers to adults. I am happy to support students in whatever their goals may be, whether its performance, songwriting, a specific piece, experimentation through improvisations, or grade / exam preparation ABRSM/RIAM/LCM/VCM/Trinity. I majored in Composition as part of my Music Degree so I enjoy arranging music for my students, adapting pieces to their level. My aim is to nurture a students love for music and support them in meeting their best potential. I want the lessons to be fun, engaging, motivational and inspiring. I love teaching music, and I know myself how rewarding it can be to attend music lessons. I believe it is so important to find the right fit for student, so I always do a trial lesson and trial period before we agree on fixed term with student. This ensures both are happy and comfortable with fit, with zero pressure to commit. PIANO: All ages. Beginners to Advanced Intermediate (grade 6) All styles. As solo and accompaniment instrument. UKULELE: All ages. Beginners to Advanced (grade 3). I mainly use this instrument as accompaniment as I am a singer first, but I cover melodic solo pieces for ukulele too, including music literacy. RECORDER: All ages. Beginners to Advanced (grade 4). All styles-traditional music, classical music, popular music. Tin Whistle: Beginners to Advanced (grade 3) -Traditional and popular songs. VOICE: All ages. Beginners to Advanced Intermediate (grade 6). All styles, I have studied classical, musical theatre, jazz and Gregorian chant. I also enjoy popular and traditional music-happy to follow students goals.&nbsp;</p> GUITAR: 8 years and up. Beginners. (For younger students I recommend starting on the ukulele to build up finger strength, skill and make it more achievable taking into account finger length) Focus on using the instrument as an accompaniment rather than solo. This is due to the organic way I learned. I was a singer first so I tend to use it as an accompaniment instrument. The lessons would include basic chordal accompaniment, riffs, and useful/adaptable patterns. Music Psychotherapist: I have 3+ years as a qualified Music- Psychotherapist running groups as well as 1:1 services within the community for those who have mental health and well being difficulties, including neglect, trauma, abuse, learning difficulties as well as other mental and physical health conditions/diagnosis. This includes supporting students with assessments, case study’s and application of theories. Goals will also include enhancing professional competence and science-informed practice, monitoring the quality of service, protecting the public, and providing a gatekeeping function for entry into the profession. The past 8 months I have also been working around Asia conducting skill-sharing projects with local communities, this has entailed assessing the needs and supporting staff to plan, set goals and implement useful and meaningful interventions. I have continued to support staff online, providing supervision, advice and guidance Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Piano Lessons
Panos K.'s review on Jun 05, 2020

During the lockdown we looked for an online teacher for my 11y old son who had some music knowledge. He loved Niamh’s lessons from the very beginning and he has made leaps in only a few lessons. Her enthusiasm is infectious. The lesson is a combination of ‘fun’ pieces that my son chooses, adjusted to his level and basic skills and technique. The lessons are always well prepared and structured. Even more impressive is how Niamh connects with my 4y old daughter, who had no previous music knowledge and has never met her in person. She loves learning the piano and complains that once a week is not enough! I could not recommend Niamh highly enough

Andre C.'s review on May 08, 2020

Niamh was, quite simply, an inspiration to my son (age 5-7). He speaks so fondly of her to this day. Niamh gave him a taste for music which I believe will stay with him forever. We would Niamh super responsive, diligent, patient and above all a delight to work with!

Britta d.'s review on May 01, 2020

Niamh Owens is a very talented , warm-hearted, inspirational teacher. She gave my daughter the self-confidence that she needed to tackle new experiences and challenges (Singing on stage by herself and playing the ukelele ) which she would never have dared without Niamh's support. Thank you, thank you, thank you! She is able to bring out the best in her pupils.

Hi,   Niamh Owens is an amazing teacher, she is really patient and loves music and manages to share her knowledge with her students. Aisling S.'s review on Apr 28, 2020

Niamh is a dedicated teacher. She is an organised person who aims to deliver the upmost professionalism in her work. She is very understanding and finds strategies to help all her students succeed. Niamh is a very patient teacher who always find the best approach for her students learning. Niamh is a fun person and her bubbly personality helps her students feel at ease and the importance of this characteristic makes her a wonderful teacher and colleague. The core of Niamh’s teaching and learning is to guide and support her students. Furthermore, she ensures that she supports her fellow colleagues and performers, giving advice at a moment’s notice. Niamh is a very optimistic person who is always open to advice and discussions with others. She is a well-sought person in the world of music, as a teacher and performer and therapist.

Niamh was a great asset to the team. Her teaching methods were fresh and innovative, which was an inspiration to us all. Her students and their parents were so happy with the way she ran the music therapy sessions. The participants in her group work were thrilled at her weekly sessions. Her reporting skills were excellent and she was always happy to share her expertise with the team.

Clare L.'s review on Apr 27, 2020

Niamh is a delightful person and engages really well with young people. She is enthusiastic and will plan her sessions very carefully. Due to her experience as a music therapist, I'm sure she will create very varied lessons and use lots of different techniques to engage with her students. I'm sure all families will love having her come and work with their child. She is very smart and will do well I'm sure.

Niamh taught both of my children, boys aged 8 and 10. She is wonderful with the children who respond well to her kind but firm teaching style. She is very organised and plans carefully for the children taking into account their interests as well as ensuring they make excellent progress. Both of my boys loved working with Niamh looking forward to their lessons each week.

Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
-Be clear about what you would like from the service. If you are unsure and need guidance here, dont be afraid to be upfront and seek advice. -Clarify that the ‘pro’ will be able to cover the criteria you need. -Make sure you have the adequate time and materials to take part in the service, again clarify this with service provider. -Check if the service provider is happy to provide trial period and make sure you are 100 percent happy with the fit before moving forward. -If you are apprehensive why dont you arrange a quick call and touch base. How did you first get into this line of work?
I attended music school from the age of 7, I worked as a performer since 2006, I then started working as a personal carer in 2007. This sparked my interest into the concept of using music as a therapeutic tool. I completed a degree in Music in 2011; this is when I started teaching, I built on my career and experience, as well as personal playing ability. In 2015 I applied to do a Masters in Music therapy, I qualified and started practicing in 2017. I then moved abroad in 2019 and started conducting my own music therapy and skill sharing projects, training staff, providing supervision and services online.
