About Health Movement

I care about doing things the right way. My personal training always prioritises the health of my clients. I strive to be as honest and informative as possible, so no empty promises or exaggerations. And no cringeworthy fad-driven advert-style offers of 20 new exercises or diet tips per week. Nor overly excited or aggressive barks of encouragement at the expense of good form and composure. The things that work are simple. They work for everyone. And they don't change, except in special circumstances. It's not about calories. That can be a cruel pursuit. It's not about pushing yourself to the limit. That's not sustainable, and not compatible with every person's attitude. My goal is to explain what works, and why, so you can achieve and maintain your own goals for the rest of your life. My Background: I changed career paths from science and engineering, to software development, to personal training. I believe my background and propensities are fitting for dealing with today's ubiquitous misinformation.

Strength Training
Jim D.'s review on Jun 09, 2020

Very knowledgeable about form and injury free lifting. I was an inexperienced lifter, so naturally strong but poor technique. I also had really hurt my shoulder to the point where I was recieving physiotherapy. Zakk had to take me back to basic principals for all my lifts to teach me correct form. In doing so he rehabbed my shoulder, and made me stronger. But why I liked working with him the most: at the slightest hint of discomfort or sharp pain, especially in my shoulder, instead of just telling me to keep going or push through, he'd be extremely receptive and he'd know how to adjust my form to avoid it. Seriously, I can manually work all day now using correct form, no back pain or shoulder issues.

Zakk offers clear and informed advice for training an weight loss. He has a deep knowledge and understanding of the physiological aspects of muscle development, weightloss and fitness. He provided me with a personal breakdown and guide on how I should improve my lifestyle with realistic goals and dietary advice. The results have been great and each week I've consistently lost weight and continually improved my fitness and strength training. I highly recommend Zakk!

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
My standard rates are as follows: - In-person personal training: £30/hour - Online personal training: £25/hour - Time spent producing diet and exercise programmes: £10/hour (the time taken depends on the complexity of the programme; typically 2-3 hours; around 5-8 hours for comprehensive rehabilitation routines) I am happy to negotiate discounts for long-term regular clients.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
I'll start with a few minutes of casual conversation. I'll ask about your goals. If you'd like me to demo parts of a session, I'll do this with your goals in mind. If you'd like to sign up with me, I'll exchange details and send you some paperwork. The questions about yourself are all optional, but the more info you can provide, the better my service can be to you. I find that answering the questions honestly also helps stimulate some valuable self-reflection, which is useful in refining your goals and finding sources of reliable, internal motivation. The first session always involves careful screening – assessing your posture and movement, your strength, mobility, flexibility, balance, coordination, your attitude to training, and your knowledge and experience. I will use this information to design a programme for you, to get you safely and efficiently to your goals. I'll then guide you through your programme until you understand it and successfully integrate it into your routine. I'm always happy to answer questions, whether during or outside of sessions. When I have enough time spare to answer your question with the detail it deserves, I'll get back to you.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I'm a qualified Personal Trainer and Nutrition and Weight Management Advisor. I changed career paths, from science and engineering, to software development, to personal training. I believe my background and my inclination to analyse how things work make me good at working out efficient and effective ways to help people achieve their goals.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Never be afraid to ask "why", when you are told something new. If the person telling you cannot explain why, don't trust what they said. If a person is forthcoming in admitting they "don't know" something, it shows they are honest. If that person knows the answer the next time you speak with them, you should probably hire them.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
You should have an idea of what your goals are. You should then ask the pros what they think of your goals. Ask how the pro is going to make your "personal" training sessions suitable for you as an individual. Ask how your time, money and effort will be spent making progress toward your goals. Ask the pro about a time they made a mistake with a client, and what they learnt from it.
What are some good examples of past customers?
I have helped an elderly gentleman to build up his strength and lose weight safely and progressively, by screening him for past and current injuries, researching and designing his rehabilitation routine, coaching him on lifting technique, designing him a progressive strength routine, and advising him on nutrition and lifestyle practices. My first clients were a young couple, who I would see together for double sessions. Their goals were in some ways opposites, but they were able to teach each other and train together for the many parts of their routines that overlapped. Since we each had different levels of ability, for example in strength and flexibility, the most capable one provided healthy competition for the other two during our circuits. I have several "unofficial" clients in the form of friends who I have coached over the years, mainly in muscular strength and/or size focussed weight training. Typically, within a few weeks of coaching, they will display better lifting technique than my own. It makes them happy, at least. I am always ready to give dietary advice, so anyone who mentions food around me is apt to learn something.
How did you first get into this line of work?
When I was a work-from-home software developer, lifting weights became my hobby. Learning all about how it works became a passion of mine, along with trying to understand which health advice to believe and which to disregard. I managed to gain 10 kg of muscle whilst staying lean, mostly within a 7 month period of lifting heavy weights, notably squatting three times per week. After racking up this experience, I began coaching friends in how to lift, and advising them on other facets of health and fitness pursuits. After spending so much time researching, experimenting with and talking about health, fitness, nutrition, sleep hygiene and productivity, it eventually seemed appropriate that I should get qualified in those areas. That soon led to my career shift.
