About Gerard Binks Photography

The best images are never spontaneous – they are a result of a photographer’s blend of creativity, regard for light and eye for detail. And if you’re looking for a professional photographer that never fails to impress, let me introduce myself. I’m Gerard, a professional PR, media and commercial photographer producing evocative imagery for clients across the UK. With over 20 years of experience as a multimedia picture editor and experienced photographer at Yorkshire Post Newspapers, I bring my instincts and expertise to every commission that I undertake. I graduated from Aireborough Grammar School, Jacob Kramer Art College, Leeds and consider myself to be a strong arts and design professional. While working at the Yorkshire Post, my assignments included covering sports events like the Champions League semi-final with Leeds United in Spain, Intertoto Cup with Bradford City in Russia. I’ve also produced images for editorial and news features including the fox hunting demonstrations in London and Nelson Mandela's visit to Leeds. I’ve also worked on a variety of fashion shoots, restaurant reviews illustrating dishes and interiors, landscape photography, commercial photography and magazine editorials. With a demonstrated history of working in the publishing industry, I’m highly skilled in photography, editing, newspaper design, and feature assignments. Whatever project you have in mind, I will closely collaborate with you and always strive to reflect your style and capture what you have in mind and produce a striking set of images. I stand out because of my great track record and wealth of experience in publishing that enables me to understand the commercial aspect and why it matters. In a nutshell, I know what editors look for so I can package a picture to how the local media want it as well as the high-impact photographs that are what the advertising wants. I have the best camera equipment to guarantee crisp and vibrant images and I always stick to my deadlines – another virtue of working in publishing! I keep my rates very competitive and offer a 10-15% discount on multiple bookings. I’d love to discuss what you have in mind, get a better idea of your expectations and then brainstorm to arrive at your preferred tone and style. I believe the secret of a successful shoot lies in being well prepared and you can count on me to produce unique and compelling images that will perfectly meet your needs. Please get in touch and I look forward to a wonderful collaboration!

Commercial Photography
Ciaire S.'s review on Jun 15, 2020

I have worked with Gerard for a number of years, since he headed the photography team at the Yorkshire Post, to him now being freelance. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending him for his professionalism, amazing photography and making the photo shoots fun. He has the ability to put people at ease and relax, help them find the best locations for the photos and always produces a winning result. Whether it is people shots, events or even product photography, I regularly recommend him to all my clients and friends.

Event Photography
Clair C.'s review on Jun 15, 2020

Gerard is a brilliant photographer with a great photographer's eye for what works to help secure regional and national profile. He is also a delight to work with and shows great professionalism in everything that he does. I can't recommend him more highly.

Headshot Photography
MARIE L.'s review on Jun 11, 2020

Gerard has a great manner and is adept at putting you at ease. He's incredibly easy to work with as he's excellent at communicating with you and proactively provides ideas to fulfil your photography brief. If images are required to be provided to the media, through his extensive experience working within the press he knows exactly the kind of images that are required to maximise and secure coverage. I would highly recommend Gerard.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
My pricing is very competitive taking into account experience and time taken to photograph the shoot. I do discounts for clients that book me on a regular basis. The equipment I use is top of the range professional Nikon DSLR
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
When starting with a new customer it is always best to have a good chat about what the client is after with regards to time frame, location, style, look, what the target audience is, where they are hoping to publish. It is nice to brainstorm to find out exactly what they require and throw in any ideas i have that may help with the clients project, whether its media contacts, locations for shoot or models.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I have an art and design background graduating From Jacob Kramer Art College, Leeds with a diploma in Spacial Design, which included photography, interior design, graphic design and window display.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
When hiring a professional photographer view their portfolio to get a feel for their work. Check their background see the history of where they worked, what they covered, how long they have been in the business, have they won any photographic awards for their work
What questions should customer have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Time frame for job, whats their deadline. What are they trying illustrate, what is the message/story behind the shoot. what formats do they require, Prints, Disks, Wetransfer of images.
What are some good examples of past customers?
Clients that know what they want, have a very detailed brief, are prepared to listen to other ideas
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
Recently I worked for an energy company that was taking down its pylons and putting all their cabling underground as not to spoil the natural beauty of the National Trust site (Fountains Abbey). I shot what the client wanted a group of people around one of the pylons that was to be removed, but then suggested that we take some shots around the site without the pylons on to show what the site would look like without the eyesores. this worked really well not only to tell the story but also to be able to shoot better grouping of people in nicer locations . The client really liked the extra images that told the story of what they were trying to achive in a different way
How did you first get into this line of work?
I first got into this line of work after leaving college. I worked at a wedding photographers in Leeds, a commercial darkroom, then started work in the Yorkshire Post darkrooms where i would go out with the photographers when not working to learn the trade. I then progressed to being a photographer starting work at Ackrills Group that ran the weekly papers of the Yorkshire Post. from there I progressed to a Senior Photographer at the Yorkshire Post, finishing off after 26 years as the Multi Media Images Editor at the Yorkshire Post before taking redundancy and becoming a freelance photographer.
