About Daniel Wood

Experienced gigging musician with friendly relaxed approach that generates real progress. Beginners welcome, intermediate and advanced also happily accepted. I put harmonic fluency, rhythmic feel, improvisation and aural awareness at the heart of the study, regardless of style. Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Thelonious Monk, Willie (the Lion) Smith and Horace Silver are, or have been my own areas of speciality. "Dan is versatile, learned and committed to creating and teaching music at the highest level. His playing reflects a depth of feeling and nuance that transmits the essence of what it means to be a jazz musician. He shines as a bandleader with a depth of understanding of the masters that never over awes his own conviction on familiar repertoire. Dan is an invaluable mentor and inspiration to his students and an asset for the future of jazz in the UK." Julian Joseph

Piano Lessons
Alba A.'s review on Jan 29, 2019

Dan has been teaching me piano since October last year. He is always patient and approachable - he uses a varied range of exercises, which make classes super fun and never repetitive; he always encourages me to improvise and explore what I naturally gravitate towards musically and I always leave with things to work on which are specific to me and our last lesson. He is responsive and accommodating even with a super busy schedule - couldn't recommend him enough!

Dan has a great love and knowledge of music and very quickly adapted lessons to fit in with my interests. His focus is on playing rather than the dots on the page. He has greatly expanded the range of music that I play and has been very helpful in suggesting pieces that I was either unaware of or wouldn't have attempted. I recently went to Cuba on holiday and Dan immediately focused on working on Cuban and Latin styles. I love playing the piano and Dan has been the catalyst that has helped me make the transition from someone who dabbles to someone who plays. He is an inspirational teacher and I thoroughly recommend him to anyone of any age (I'm in my sixties) who wants to play the piano.

Dan teaches piano to our two children aged 11 and 9. Both kids absolutely love his teaching style. He engages them in all aspects of instrument playing with a variety of different games, challenges and strategies and he works with them to find music that they are keen to play. Our older child has taken an exam in Jazz PIano and is studying music theory while playing Wonderwall and This Is Me from The Greatest Showman. Our younger child is just gaining confidence in playing with two hands but is also playing Darth Vader’s theme from Star Wars and some Ed Sheeran. I would confidently recommend Dan as a really imaginative thoughtful teacher who is very encouraging and creative.

Dan has been teaching all 3 of my kids for over 5 years - both jazz and classical piano. He's a really inspiring teacher who combines practical teaching with lots of theory and background musical knowledge. He pitches the lessons perfectly for their age and ability, with both high expectations and lots of encouragement. And patience. They all love playing, which is definitely down to Dan's teaching!

Dan is an excellent teacher and it shows in the improvement my twins (9) have made in their piano playing. He is well prepared with all the materials and makes the lessons quite fun. I know the children really enjoy the lessons, they even play at school now. (Lessons at home only) He writes homework in a diary for them and gives us feedback after the lesson. Dan wrote a whole page of exercises each to practice when we were away for the holidays so they didn’t forget. The foreign teacher was very impressed. I also love listening to them play for me. To see my children play Beethoven is amazing. Dan comes twice a week and has been very reliable for nearly two years now. I would clearly recommend him to any parent wishing to have their child play the piano and to read music.

I’ve been having piano lessons with Dan for over 3 years. I’m in my 50a and have never played before or read music and Dan is the most enthusiastic and inspirational teacher. He is so patient and gives me the confidence and belief that I can play. He makes the lessons fun and I always look forward to the nextx lesson. Thanks for being so encouraging and making piano fun !

Dan is a very good piano teacher with a good understanding on how to help his students be the best with the instrument. He's reliable & mummy-daughter is comfortable around him. - Abby
