About Chalfont St Giles Piano Instruction

Music is more than a hobby or a potential career option – it sparks hope and keeps us dreaming in times of sorrow or joy. As a piano teacher, I have seen how playing an instrument improves confidence in the player and shapes their unique personalities. Learning to play the piano can offer several incredible psychological and physical benefits that are needed at this difficult time. Whether you want to learn to pass your music exams, find a novel way to while away the hours or you want to develop your current skills, I can teach you to become a confident piano player. I have been teaching the piano for over 30 years, both as head of music in schools across London, Buckinghamshire, and California, and privately at home. I completed my music, dance and music therapy training at Arts Educational London and the Guildhall College of Music London as well as courses in child development at Berkeley University, California. For over 24 years, I have been running a music company delivering music classes and sessions to children and the elderly in care homes as well as people with special needs. I write all the class and session plans for my company as well as all songs for children that we use. It’s rewarding to see how music instils a sense of wonder in any community, and I have enthusiastic and talented franchisees all over the UK. Whatever level you are at, I will create bespoke lessons to develop your technique and also encourage you to go beyond your potential. I believe that learning to play the piano should be fun and never boring. Learning should never be a chore, and I strive to ensure that my lessons are enjoyable, so you continue to progress and explore your skills to the fullest. For more information, please get in touch, and I will be happy to answer any questions. At the moment, because of the pandemic, I teach online. Thank you for reading my profile, and I look forward to teaching you soon!

Piano Lessons
Julie O.'s review on Nov 25, 2020

I have known Sally for many years .She is an excellent piano teacher . I have two , very different children who both enjoyed taking piano lessons with her from a very young age . With Sally’s calm ,patient, thorough , approach to teaching they were able to learn at a pace suited to them and progress through all their piano exams with confidence and ease . I liked the fact that it was not only about exams and that Sally would encourage them to enjoy all sorts of music and teach them to play for enjoyment for example Christmas Carols and favourite songs . I would absolutely recommend her for anyone wanting to learn to play the piano .

Amazing piano teacher who works wonders. Looked after my daughter up to the age of 11 and took her to Grade 6 piano and helped her with music scholarship auditions. Helped my 13 year old son with his music scholarship auditions (G8+) and supported him after during the holidays when he was at boarding school. Gentle magical encouragement. Music exam results nothing less than a Distinction. Children have a love of music which is incorporated into their daily lives. Very grateful to have found such a brilliant teacher and would recommend Sally without hesitation for beginners to more advanced students, from very young primary to older teens.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I charge £35 per hour and can also offer half an hour lessons for £18 and 45mins at £27. I also teach group classes for either adults or children. These classes are £8 per 45 minute session - £80 for the ten week beginner course.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
I like to chat with a new customer to ascertain how they would like to learn and whether they would like to take grade exams, or play for their own enjoyment.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Nothing beats experience, which I have years of. My training as a music therapist also gives me an alternative way of looking at the psychological approaches and benefits of learning to play. It has also taught me patience and that kindness goes a long way to getting the best results from a pupil.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Make sure that you like the person and get on well with them. Do they have a patient, kind approach and will they allow you to develop at your own pace?
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
I want to play for my own enjoyment - will you allow that? I would like to take grade exams - have you had pupils take exams before and what is your pass rate.
What are some good examples of past customers?
I have had customers with special needs, very young children as well as older clients. You are never to old to learn and benefit from the incredible power of music.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
Recently due to the pandemic and not being able to teach in care homes and nursing facilities, my company produced a DVD for older adults living in care with popular songs and music, chair based exercise, interesting facts and quiz type questions. It took about one month for me to collect all the material and produce the film.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I started teaching the piano over 30 years ago in London. As head of music in a school, I had requests from parents to teach their children privately as well as the class music lessons they had. I also had requests from parents as well.

I also help to prepare students for music Theory examinations. I teach students from my home on a grand piano which provides students with a real performance feel! I take a sound approach to technique but first and foremost, learning should be fun!
