How much does a personal trainer cost?

Mar 20, 2018

On average the cost of a personal training session is around £45. This can, however, vary depending on the factors discussed in the sections below.

Your Health and Fitness
Before you hire a personal trainer, you should always speak with a medical professional first. This is especially true if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. They will be able to advise you on the best type of physical activity for your health.
Your Goals

Do you have an upcoming event you need to prepare for? How about a goal you'd like to achieve in a certain time-frame? If you answered yes to either of these questions you should keep this in mind when looking for a personal trainer.

Mentioning your goals right from the beginning is a great way to kickstart your personal training sessions. When your personal trainer knows your goals from the start, they can create your fitness plan accordingly. Equipped with this personalised fitness plan, you are that much more likely to succeed and achieve your goals.

Group Vs. Private Sessions

If you find that working out around others inspires you then consider group lessons. Group sessions are a fun way to make new friends and get fit. They are also usually more cost-effective, as you will share the base cost among your group members.

You can also explore a variety of different fitness routines with these classes from cardio to strength-training. All you need to do is decide which option fits best with your schedule and put on your workout clothes!

Private lessons are a good option as well. These can be more convenient as you can usually work out the most convenient time with your personal trainer. In this case, there’s no need to try and fit into a group schedule, which makes scheduling easier. However, as you will be working one-on-one with your trainer you should expect the cost to be higher.

Session Length

The duration of your session is one of the primary influences on cost. It only makes sense that longer sessions will generally have a higher cost than brief sessions.

On average, the length of most personal training sessions is an hour. This is an ideal time-frame. An hour-long session offers enough time to move through a comprehensive workout routine.

Hour-long sessions are also ideal if you can only meet with your personal trainer once a week. It will provide plenty of time for you to catch up on your additional fitness activities outside of training and enjoy a full work-out.

The Frequency of Your Sessions

The frequency of your sessions can also impact the price as well. Some personal trainers offer training packages based on the number of sessions. Purchasing one of these can be more cost-effective than paying on a per-session basis. If you plan on working with a personal trainer on a routine basis be sure to ask if these packages are an option.

The location of your personal trainer is a primary influence on their rates. Localised rental costs, the cost of living and competitor rates can all impact prices.

The physical location where it takes place will also determine the cost. If you receive fitness training in a gym, your personal trainer will need to cover gym rental costs. In contrast, if you opt for training at home or in a park, gym rental costs won't be as much of a factor.

Experience and Qualifications

Your personal trainer's level of experience will also influence rates. A personal trainer who has worked with clients for several years will have different rates than a new personal trainer who is seeking experience. However, this doesn't mean that a new personal trainer is less qualified.

In the UK, personal trainers study subjects such as anatomy, physiology and nutrition. Then, before they can take on clients they must obtain a level three personal training certificate. This demonstrates their expertise in the methods of personal training.

In addition to this certificate, they may also join the Register of Exercise Professionals. In the UK the REP is the official governing body for personal trainers. A membership with the REP demonstrates a commitment to excellence.

Even if your personal trainer doesn’t have decades of experience as long as they have the appropriate certificates and qualifications you can rest easy knowing you will receive top-notch fitness training.

The Type of Workout

There are countless different ways to approach a workout. The type that you settle on could influence price as well. Sometimes prices can differ between the different types of available workouts.

Below we've listed a few popular fitness training alternatives to personal training along with their respective costs.

Strength Training - £35
High-Intensity Interval (HIIT) - £50
Body Weight Training - £74

Some of the benefits that you could see as a result of your personal training experience include:

  • An increased level of motivation to attend the gym

I've had 3 sessions with Carter and Anthony at EDPT so far and it seems to be going well. They push hard and after each session, I've felt like I really pushed myself. They focus on good technique first and foremost so that you are exercising correctly and safely and I look forward to the result moving forward.

After working with Mo for over a month. I have to say it's been a pleasure and it hasn't felt like a chore at all . Which I tend to find when usually trying to exercise. I initially had a free taster session with him. We discussed my goals and I felt very reassured he could help me get in shape for my wedding in 6 months. After one month of 8 sessions with a simple nutrition plan to follow., I lost 8kg! So glad I signed up, I needed a kick up the butt and I am confident I'll be looking good for my wedding!
