1. The Personal Touch – The first and most obvious hack is to do with appearance. And this is crucial. Your invoice will go through many sets of hands and it will land on a lot of desks. So you need to make sure you use all this exposure as a platform to promote your business.
Think of it almost as free advertising.
Indeed, this bit of A4 represents your company in the eye of your customer. You need to make it stand out, but how? Well, first off, always include your company logo and a brief thank you message. And by adding a discount code on invoices, you’re also encouraging repeat business!

2. A Bit of a Creative Flair – Hack number 2 is all about breathing some life into this dull part of your daily admin. Yes, it’s an official document. And yes, it’s a very important one—it ensures you get paid! But there’s no reason why you can’t get a little creative with it.
Why not add an inspiring quote to go with your thank you message? Nothing too dramatic or over the top. Just something that reflects what your business does and what you’re all about. A quote about improvising, for example, might be great for a music school. But it’s hardly the best idea for a security firm or structural engineering consultants!
Here’s a couple of our current favourites. One comes from Einstein: ‘Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.’ Another is from Larry Page, co-founder of Google: ‘Always deliver more than expected.’ You’ll know when you come upon the right one.
3. Strength in Numbers – Whilst hacks 1. and 2. are great for making your invoice stand out and promoting your business, let’s not forget the main point of the document. Invoices are for making sure you get paid! Latest research shows that smaller firms in the UK are owed an eye-watering £70 billion in late payments. And that’s where hack 3. comes in, because it’s not only how your invoice looks, but what you do with it that harnesses potential.
First off, send the invoice as soon as you can. The quicker you send it, the quicker it can be paid. Furthermore, the easier an invoice is to understand, the less questions your customer will have. Again, this hopefully means quicker payment.
Last but not least is persistence. There’s nothing wrong with sending gentle, polite reminders about your invoice. Be it a few days before the due date, on the day itself, or afterwards. It’s your money, after all, and you have a right to ask for it.
