I connected with Daniel at Total Body Fitness through Bidvine and having never used a website like this before I was understandably overwhelmed at first with the number of replies I received to my request for a personal trainer. Daniel's message to me was open, clear and and to the point - there was no sales patter, just clear communication in response to what I needed. I read his reviews, which also helped make my choice and six months later I haven't looked back. Daniel is an excellent personable, polite and professional personal trainer. It is evident he tailors his approach as to what works for his clients and for me that means being demanding and encouraging whilst keeping it fun. I can admit there have been occasions where I wish he'd cancelled (this has never happened!) because I'd rather not be outside training, however I have never ever left a session anything but invigorated and happy and I am grateful to him for this. Having used a personal trainer in the past I think it is important to mention that he is always professional and presentable, he has a variety of equipment (always clean - which is important for a germaphobe) and no two sessions are ever the same.

I am the sort of person that struggles to allocate time to anything other than work and spending time with my young family, so the concept of a 20 minute workout, once per week is a very appealing one, to say the least. Wanting to lose some weight (about 1 stone) and tone up a bit, I decided to give The Body Shape Studios a try. Back in June ’15 I went into the Surbiton Studio for a ‘introductory session’ where I would experience EMS (electro muscle stimulation) for the first time ever! Being relative new to the UK there is very little in the way of media coverage for this method of personal training, it appears that The Body Shape Studios are the first of its kind in the UK to offer a private personal training experience in a dedicated EMS studio. However since I began my EMS journey there are now more than 10 similar studios across the country with, it seems, the popularity of this method of full body training ever increasing. My research on EMS training prior to my intro session showed that it appears to be extremely popular in Germany (Miha Bodytec which The Body Shape Studios use is a German product), Austria, Spain and to be honest, most of Europe, as well as South Africa, and the middle east. This put my mind at ease as I was initially concerned by the lack of presence in the UK. So back to my intro session – I was greeted by a friendly face and was immediately put at ease as to what I was about to experience. My trainer talked me through the basics of how the technology works and what benefits I would come to expect. I explained what I wanted to achieve and together we set out some goals. In a nutshell you wear a full body suit with pairs of electrodes on all the major muscle groups. You are then connected to ‘the device’ which is a laptop type contraption which sends electronic impulses to all the pairs of electrodes during the workout. I am told these impulses essentially mimic the electronic impulses sent to your muscles by the brain. These impulses contract the muscles up to 85,000 times per second, while you carry out a series of bodyweight exercises for the duration of the 20-minute workout. THIS IS TOUGH! The effort you have to exert during the workout is immense; with the levels turned up each exercise really takes everything you have to complete. As a result you really are getting a thorough full body workout. With my goals clear to my trainer we then work on specific areas each week to strip fat and build and tone muscles beneath that fat! The day after, and especially the day after that, your muscles feel very stiff and thoroughly ‘worked out’ leaving you with what is know as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness – I am casually informed of by my trainer). I personally enjoy this feeling, knowing I pushed my body and will be reaping the benefits of the previous workout. I have now completed 16 weeks and have loved every single session, getting leaner, stronger and fitter each week. It was after about 7 weeks that I really noticed the fat dropping off and the muscle definition starting to come through. Of course this form of training does need to be complimented by a healthy balanced diet with plenty of protein for muscle recovery – my trainer reinforces this with me at every session to keep me on track. It isn’t just the physical difference that I have noticed since joining The Body Shape Studios though; I now seem to have a lot more energy, which in turn is spurring me on to further my progress. I am totally convinced this is the way forward for me to keep in shape and have just signed up to a 12 month membership, bringing the per session cost down, when compared with a single session or a shorter term membership package. If you are even slightly curious and think this could work for you – GIVE IT A GO! We as a nation tend to be sceptical of new innovations within the fitness industry but this really is effective and more importantly for me its very time efficient! I have had 10 personal training sessions with Louise now, she is amazing, I was previously at a gym and I can honestly say I have achieved more in these 10 lessons than I did in 12 months at the gym, she pushes you to your limit, you feel like you've achieved something, I am seeing results already, yes it's painful, but no pain no gain, and she is also helping me with my nutrition, she's very friendly and her group classes are great fun too as everyone is doing the same thing so you don't feel uncomfortable in any way, and you also get to be outside. I would highly recommend Louise Jenkins if you want to get fit and healthy and enjoy yourself at the same time!
