About Viktor Mastoridis

My name is Viktor and I live in East London, E10. I am a guitarist and music teacher. I teach beginners, intermediate and advanced students who want to expand their skills. Special focus on improvisation, variation, creating music as well as aural skills. I am a part-time music teacher at a primary school, hold a valid DBS and can teach young children from the age of 5 onwards. At the first free lesson, a small assessment of abilities is carried, and we set the goals for each individual according to their level. Pricing for a 60 minutes lesson: one-to-one £30 at my place, or £25 over Skype. I can also travel, but the price will depend on the distance. Duration of lessons can be altered according to your needs. Your first lesson is free. About Me I am a guitarist actively performing since 1980, I've performed in Yugoslavia, Greece, Holland and since 2000 in the UK. I am a self-taught musician who learned from various teachers, many books, much more practising and an extraordinary love for music, especially guitar playing. Because of my self-education, I have a wide knowledge of music that surpasses the borders of genres, countries and time; I have also a free mind, thinking out-of-the-box in many situations. I have ignited the love for music in young children and inspired and led young musicians to become disciplined professionals. I have been composing and producing music since the age of 16 and have developed mastery in building finished songs from scratch ideas consisting of a couple of notes or chords. My main personal focus is a fusion of Rock/Blues with Balkan music (see video); I compose and perform music with my band Valkania – our album Roots has been selected as one the 3 best world Music albums at the Indie Acoustic Project. We regularly perform across London and beyond. My music is being performed in numerous films and TV series across the world. Topics Covered: Music Theory & Technique - Simple and extended pentatonic scales in Blues - Power chords and riffs in Rock - 'Cool' rhythm guitar playing in Funk & Pop - Other scales used in classical, rock, jazz, blues, folk and Balkan music - Playing rhythms and arpeggios on guitar: samba, beguine, rumba, zeimbekiko, rockabilly - Playing uneven time-signatures: 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8 etc (the song on the video is an 11/8 time-signature rock tune) - Ornaments: hammer-on and pull-off, bend, slide, tapping, trills, tremolo, etc. - Understanding the roots of all chords - Forming chords from scales or by inspiration - Understanding and applying chord progressions typical for various styles: blues, rock , jazz, folk, Balkan, Greek - Reading guitar tablature as well as standard music notation Composition, Improvisation and Aural Skills - Creating chord progression over melody and melody over chord progression - Improvise on one scale using several chords - Improvise over one chord using several scales - Improvise using two or more scales at the same time - Scales used specifically for improvisation, but not for singing -Differences in improvisation in jazz, rock and Balkan/Greek music - Learning to play songs by listening only - Analysing and recognising chords and scales About Skype Lessons You need a laptop or desktop computer with internet connection and a webcam, as well as a (free) Skype account. Guitar Lessons
Thierry D.'s review on Mar 11, 2016

I have worked as a Music Teacher Assistant with Viktor since September 2011. During this time I have seen Viktor teaching a wide range of Music subjects as well as Instruments. His one to one guitar teaching is excellent. He provides high quality music knowledge from well-known resources to his own resources. He is always very inclusive and patient with his pupils and always makes sure that the pupil is engaged in learning. He always provides great quality material in many different musical genres and has a very positive, fun and professional attitude with his students.

Guitar Lessons
Steve H.'s review on Feb 18, 2016

Several years ago I was looking for a guitar teacher. I play some guitar, I can read tabs, I make my own songs. But every time I start writing a song, I hit 'the wall' – I can't develop it further, I am stuck. I wanted to expand my knowledge, to be able to develop ideas. I saw Viktor's ad in a local newspaper. With Viktor I immediately recognised two things: the authority that comes from his wide knowledge and the ability to recognise my own needs and answer them. He is patient, inspiring and a lovely personality to work with. Recommended.
