About Sheffield Guitar Studio

Playing an instrument is more than a hobby; it enriches life with possibilities while also enhancing personal development. I am an experienced music teacher committed to inspiring my students to reach their musical milestones. Since 2005, I have been offering guitar lessons, and I have a solid track record of enabling students to become the guitar players they aspire to be. I teach all ages, from younger children to more mature students, and I specialise in rock, pop, blues and acoustic styles. My approach is simple and straightforward. No matter what level you are at, your needs will come first, and I will create a customised learning programme relevant to your goals and ambitions. More importantly, this programme is flexible enough to be modified based on your progress. What makes me stand apart from other teachers is that I want you to enjoy the process of learning. I believe that learning should never be forced or rigid as this puts many off. I will encourage you to take in, understand the instrument, and learn while having fun every step of the way! Lessons occur at my home studio or online via Skype or Zoom. For students to obtain the maximum benefits, I use recording equipment to help track progress, notation software to provide clear lesson materials and Dropbox to ensure that lesson materials are available at any time. I also offer support by creating personalised videos on demand at any point to aid practice and development. Due to the lockdown, my lessons are currently online, but this doesn’t detract from their quality. I want the online experience to match private face-to-face sessions as much as possible, so I use clear audio, and backing tracks, and remote recording of you playing (I can record the sound of you playing and use this for analysis in lessons). You will have access to resources that include additional learning and practice materials, a newsletter including free video lessons on a different topic every week, and 24/7 support with your learning and video recaps. Throughout, I remain accessible to respond to any questions and guide you in areas you need it the most. My rates are reasonable, and if you choose to pay the monthly fee, it is more cost-effective than single sessions. Also, when you book six lessons or more, I offer a discount; and the more you book, the higher the discount! As every student is unique, I want to personalise our sessions specifically for you. To start, I recommend a free introductory session for me to assess your abilities and discuss how we can overcome your challenges. I currently offer a 20% discount on the first full month of lessons. If you are interested in guitar lessons and would like to get started, please get in touch for a quick chat and the next steps. I look forward to helping you start an amazing musical journey!

Guitar Lessons
Kavan D.'s review on Mar 05, 2021

I have tried many guitar teachers until Jon and he is by far and away the best. Very attentive to what you want to learn and actually cares about you improving and is always there to answer questions. Most ideal teacher for any stage guitarist!

Sam M.'s review on Mar 01, 2021

Jonathan is a really knowledgeable teacher and really personable, I felt comfortable from my first session with him. I am an 'advanced' guitarist and came to Jon with a few issues I had with my playing. He has done a great job of pinpointing the reasons for these issues and breaking them down into manageable exercises to help me improve. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a great tutor.

Guitar Lessons
Ashley W.'s review on Mar 01, 2021

I've had a number of guitar teachers over the years and used youtube in the gaps. I can say hands down Jon is one of the best teachers I've had. Jon goes beyond just tailoring lessons to suit my specific requirements, he has a keen eye (and ear) for detail and he immediately spotted minor things in my playing from the first couple of lessons which were holding me back. Beyond that, he's teased out my weaknesses and set me challenging tasks, based on the music I love, to grow and improve. Jon has made the "impossible songs" become possible. Thanks Jon!

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
My standard lesson rate is £35 an hour though by charging by the month you can save. I charge £63 a month for an hour lesson every 2 weeks or a 30 minute lesson every week or £120 a month for an hour lesson every week. Further discounts are available on block bookings of lessons of 8 or more. Contact me for details about this. I also offer a 20% discount on the first full month of lessons.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
It's important that I have as much information about the student when we start lessons and it's also very important that students trust that I have their interests in mind when teaching them. This is why I give a free introductory lesson offer a discount on the first full month so that we can build up the trust and understanding required to make a long term difference in the student's playing. I work to find out about the student's learning style and preferences so that I can adapt as quickly as possible and help them to the best of my abilities.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I have been playing guitar since 1993 and teaching since 2005. I have toured and recorded, playing hundreds of gigs all over the country. In addition I have run my own music school in Leeds and so have developed the organisations skills needed to deliver lessons effectively and efficiently.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Ask to see testimonials and do your own independent research into their credentials and experience. Look for their own website, facebook, instagram etc and find out about how they communicate. Read review sites and find out they have a profile and if they are getting good feedback from students. Finally make sure that they can help you with your needs. Contact them and ask questions about what they do, how experienced they are and their results.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Where can I find verified testimonials from students. What styles of music do you teach. How will you teach me? What methods will you use to help me progress. What you need to make sure is that the teacher asks questions of you. If they start asking about you then then are taking an interest in you and are already trying to find out about how they can help.
What are some good examples of past customers?
Examples of previous students' reviews can be found at my pages at Yell(dot)com, facebook and on google. you can find these by searching for 'Sheffield Guitar Studio'. I'm not allowed to post direct links on here.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
I have a loyal base of students, many of whome I have been teaching for many years and have gone from being beginner guitarists to quite advanced players. It's a pleasure to teach them and to be rewarded by their growth and development as musicians.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I first started teaching for extra cash but loved it so much that I went full time in 2008.
