What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
We offer free estimates for a fixed price on the job. Fixed prices will not change unless customers change the specification of the work. This is discussed and agreed before any extra work takes place. Should the job need extra work done to achieve the same result this will be discussed with reasons being specified. If extra work is required due to no fault of the customer or the company this will also be discussed and a suitable conclusion reached.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
An initial phone call will be made to establish the scope of the works. Once a date is arranged to carry out a free estimate, the estimate is sent via a preferred communication method. Once this is agreed the work can proceed on a date to suit the customer.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
All of our painters are experienced and suitably trained. Most of our painters hold painting and decorating NVQ certificates.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
The painter will estimate a realistic price for the work. Unrealistic prices lead to rushed work with lack of attention to detail and quality. Expect the work to cost what a professional painter should cost. The time spent on a job reflects the quality, this means preparation will be thorough and your paint job will last longer. When a painter underquotes on a job, he will rush the job, you are much better off getting a realistic timescale which will be realistically priced and done at a speed that fulfills the customer's needs. Painting is more than just slapping paint on a wall.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Customers should have a good idea about what they want to achieve. The budget is very important as this will establish what can be realistically achieved within the customer's budget and time specifications. If a customer is able to leave painters to it in an unoccupied house during working hours, the work will be done so much quicker. A customer should ask when the work will take place, the hours of work during the day the house will be occupied by the team and when approximately it is likely to finish. Good examples are customers who are organised and let us know what their lifestyle routine is within the house. This way we can arrange the work around the customer so that minimum life disruptance is achieved. It is helpful to discuss where the work should start and arrange this according to the customer's movements in the evenings etc.
What are some good examples of past customers?
Customers who are organised ensure their work is sped up. Customers with pets who will need to relocate their pet food and litter trays etc do so in a timely fashion and ensure the room being worked on is not cluttered when the painters come back, especially if the painters had to empty the room in order to get the work done. Cluttered houses take twice the time to decorate and customers who respect this get the most value from professional decorators.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
Hallway, staircase and landing painting. The job took 2 days with 2 painters attending. The areas were decluttered by the customer, the customer stayed out of the house from 8.30am to 4.30pm which was the reason the job was so successful. When painting stairways, landings and hallways (busy traffic areas) it is a very good idea to stay away from home until it is complete. We often experience damage to completed works if customers are in the home while the work takes place (as the paint is not suitably dry at this point) which means we have to go back to touch up any damage.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I have been decorating for over 25 years. I started with renovating homes and selling them. I decided I was good at what I did and enjoyed the results. I decided to start up my own business after being let down by tradespersons and realising its hard to find someone who is reliable, trustworthy, and will actually turn up to carry out the work successfully.
