About Purple Monkey Music

Hi, I offer 1 to 1 tuition in guitar, keyboards, theory and drums and I deliver group music sessions including rock schools. I also offer mobile and studio recording and production and live sound services. I live in Barnsley and have been teaching in Yorkshire for 6 years. I teach electric and acoustic guitar using tabs, the Rockschool syllabus and iPad apps. I teach keyboards rather than piano but can teach sight reading if required. I would definitely like more drum students as it is my favourite instrument! I work well with both children and adults and I have gained experience with many different client groups and types of learners over the years. I have a varied and fun delivery style and like to encourage singing and rhythm skills. I embrace new technology as I find it helps with engagement and accessibility. My tuition charges include petrol costs, books and sometimes instruments and I offer discounts for loyalty and regular bookings. I can also advise on buying an instrument, iPad or any music technology gear. I tend not to do lessons less than 45 minutes long as all my lessons include: - an individual lesson plan and writeup - revision of last lesson and tasks given - learning something new - iPad music games - explanation of tasks to work on You can check out my reviews on my website and facebook page, available on my Bidvine profile. Please contact me here anytime but only if you are seriously interested and willing to practice regularly! Emma

Guitar Lessons
Jamie S.'s review on May 10, 2020

Emma has been a superb tutor during this difficult time she’s been in constant contact with support and ideas. I once was a face to face student moving to online sessions over FaceTime which has been a great. I would highly recommend Emma to anyone wanting to learn guitar. So far she’s helped with my timing (16th notes). Breaking down simple ways of learning each note on the fret board. Different strumming techniques, warm up exercises, basic solos working within timing and I’ve only had a handful of lessons. She’s very friendly and very analytical in her approach to teaching.

Emma is very personable and a joy to learn from. She has a fantastic ability to teach, for me she simplified things that had baffled me for a long time, she has reignited my interest and I cannot wait for my next lesson.

Piano Lessons
Alex O.'s review on Feb 24, 2020

Emma has always presented herself as a true professional. She was able to teach me keyboard skills to a high standard. Introduced to various such as GarageBand and Loopy, allowing me to play 2 handed material (I only have one arm) and create backing tracks. Advice on specialist music technology hardware which provides alternative ways to create and perform music. Variety of lesson content eg singing, sight reading, recording, arranging and composition. Also advanced theory, harmony, intervals, modes and rhythm work. Detailed lesson notes, loan of equipment and books.

Drum Lessons
Adele R.'s review on Feb 19, 2020

Emma has taught our son for several years and he has progressed significantly in that time. Emma is an enthusiastic teacher and obviously takes a lot of pleasure from music and seeing her students progress. Emma has also been a great help when we upgraded to an electric drum kit and was able to advise what to look for and the best places to go. Definitely recommend as my son enjoys his lessons with Emma.

Guitar Lessons
Dominic V.'s review on Jul 05, 2019

Doing lessons with Emma I've learn an insane amount of knowledge about guitar from different methods and techniques of strumming and vibrato and some song writing methods like scales and chord progression and even , straight up songs. She has taught me both rhythm and lead gutair techniques and introduced me to new music genres and bands which have helped inspire me out of lesson to practise. The flexibility with learning what I wanted such as if I had a song I wanted to learn also helped keep me interested and entertained by the learning process. The friendliness and care given by Emma also makes the lesson seem very personal and not at all scary to play in front of people and their also makes the lessons much more fun as it allows there to be banter between us. Emma is a great guitar tutor and has allowed me to learn new skills and most importantly has taught me to learn guitar and keeps me interested in the learning by making each lesson different and teaching new things every time and also by giving tasks to complete whilst out of lesson to keep me playing and practising. Finally if it wasn't for her I would have never began listening to great bands like Radiohead

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
Prices vary according to wether I travel or deliver at my home or online. Longterm students and block bookings get discounts!
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
I ask them what sort of music they like listening to, wether they have any special requirements (ie left handed) and wether they are a text or a phone person! I try to find out what their goal is (grades, be in a band, just for fun) and how much time they can give to practicing. I establish how lesson notes will be sent to them.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Grade 5 music theory, BA(hons) Creative Music Technology And Sound Recording, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector - PTLLS, Arts Award, Music leader, Safeguarding
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Be realistic about practicing and honest about your goals and requirements
What are some good examples of past customers?
They already have a PASSION for listening to music and have other musical relations or friends. Adults generally realise that music is it’s own reward! They can realistically integrate practice into their everyday lives.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
I delivered various musical activities for an organisation in Leeds as part of their summer holiday offering. They were day long activities which included musical games, iPad rockschool and putting music and sound effects to video game footage.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I got a taste of delivering workshops and 1 to 1 tuition during my degree and subsequent job at a City Learning Centre and I absolutely loved it! A few years later I got a job as a "music worker" with Barnsley YMCA where I thoroughly enjoyed using everything I had studied for during my degree.
