About Nuno Oliveira

Nuno. - Experienced and Friendly Drums Tutor Hi! I am Nuno, a professional London-based drummer, with plenty of performing and teaching experience. I graduated from a BMus Popular Music Performance degree at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in 2019 with First Honours, and I've been playing and studying music, and more specifically drums for 16 years. In that time, I've been involved in several bands and other projects, and I've taught drums and percussion to people with ages ranging from 4 to 55. I also work in a drum shop/studio, and I have been a drums auditioning tutor in ICMP since 2019. For 10 years I've been playing guitar and bass, too and have managed to use those skills to write and record my own music. As such, I've gained experience in both songwriting, recording, and producing music. I am passionate about music and drums, and also very excited to pass on the knowledge I've acquired over all these years. As I currently have the chance to take on a few more students, I'm happy to teach people of all ages and levels, as I'd love to inspire more people to play music, be it as a dream or just a hobby. My sessions are entirely based on the individual needs and abilities of each student. My lessons are light and fun, as well as educative and will help you (and/or yours) reach your drumming goals. Whether it’s your first time picking up a pair of sticks, or you’re at a fairly advanced level and wish to take your drumming or percussion skills to the next level, you can count on my tutoring services to help and support your talent. Simply get in touch for a quick chat, and I look forward to playing great music with you. Nuno.

Drum Lessons
Yasmine A.'s review on Jun 03, 2017

Thank you, Nuno, for your fun drum lessons! My 4-year-old was apprehensive before his very first lesson but as soon as you left, he kept asking when you were coming back and stated that he did indeed want drum lessons. He loved his second drum lesson today, too, and at dinner he was drumming away with a pair of chop sticks! Your lessons are perfectly tailored for my son and we look forward to the lessons to come.

Drum Lessons
Andrea P.'s review on May 30, 2017

Nuno taught a professional, engaging and enthusiastic first drum lesson to my teenage daughter. He arrived on time and his personality was really cheerful and conscientious. Nuno explained thoroughly the process of tuning the drum and then he patiently taught the lesson.Excellent service. Would thoroughly recommended him.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I typically charge £30-£35 for an in-person one hour lesson (including, and depending on, travel costs). For younger players, or those who prefer to keep it light, a 30 minute lesson will cost between £20-£25. For online lessons, I charge £25 per hour, or £15 for a 30 minute lesson. I am happy to offer a first online lesson trial for £10 per hour, or £8 for 30 minutes (simply to cover for Bidvine costs). Please read below for my standard process when starting with a new student. Discounts for multiple lesson bookings are available, please get in touch to know more.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Meeting a new teacher for the first time can be quite stressful, and at times, uncomfortable. While I try to keep things light and relaxed, my approach to meeting a new student will vary depending on the student, and their expectations from my lessons, as well as goals and aspirations. A first lesson tends to be more about me and the student getting to know each other. I like to try to find out what their expectations are from my lessons, and where their drumming level lies, but if they are looking to get evolving from that first lesson, I am happy to discuss this beforehand and get going straight away!
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
My 3 year Bachelor's degree in ICMP is likely the most relevant education period I went through. Not only did it expand my mind as to what drumming can be, but also thought me about lots of different genres, playing styles, as well as approaches to teaching and problem-solving. Equally, having been ICMP's drums auditioning tutor since December 2019, I have come across many different drummers, with different expectations as well as skill levels, not only on drumming, but also reading, and music theory.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing the right teacher. There are as many approaches to teaching as there are tutors, and you just have to find what, and who, works for you. The only way to do this is to jump into lessons with a tutor whose profile sounds the best to you, and whose approach and skill level better matches you and your aspirations. Occasionally, you may realise after a while that you would like to try another drum teacher whose teaching style you feel will works better with you. Due to this, I don't require multiple lesson bookings at a time, in case you ever change your mind. However, discounts are available if you choose to do so.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
I am happy to be asked anything about my experience, as well as teaching style.
What are some good examples of past customers?
Daniyal (read Yasmine's review on my profile) was lovely to teach.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I always knew I wanted to be a drummer, and tutoring just comes naturally with it. I started when I was about 9/10 as a drummer/percussionist in a Philharmonic, and that's when I evolved as a musician for the following 8 years, until I moved to London. In my last year there I was the Philharmonic's School Drum and Percussion Teacher, so when I moved to London it was natural for me to keep tutoring!
