About Netcentrics UK

With 23 years of web industry experience, I've been supporting UK SMEs online as a full-time freelance web designer since 2005. Please see my Google reviews and my site for more testimonials. Specifically, I offer cost-effective web design, development *and* uniquely flexible digital marketing packages for startups, small firms and charities. I like to look after my customers. That means providing a one-stop shop for ongoing support and online marketing services as well as web design and programming. I hold a Computer Science degree (first-class BSc Hons), but prefer to avoid the techno-babble. You tell me your goals, and I'll offer solutions to help you reach them. WordPress is the most popular and flexible starting point for those, so I've been developing sites with that for over 15 years. Still, it isn't perfect for every project, so I have used other platforms and scratch-built complex web apps when needed, too. So, if you're a startup, small business or charity - let's talk.

Emma C.'s review on Jul 09, 2020

Can't recommend him highly enough. He was extremely professional, laid out exactly what we needed to do and his role within that, setting expectations all round very clearly, and working within our budgetary constraints to set clear boundaries. He was extremely prompt and punctual in his responses and work. He was also extremely patient with his recommendations and explanations, which were clear and simple to follow. Excellent value for us as a charity. We're very grateful to him - he was a real pleasure to work with.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I offer a wide range of site building and promotional services at small-biz-friendly prices. These include: -- Affordable starter website packages, -- More advanced web design, development and support -- Uniquely flexible SEO & digital marketing packages -- Social media support packages -- Special services like cost-effective video testimonials and contactless restaurant menus
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
My package offers are detailed on my site and can be bought direct from there - but it's often best to have a (free) chat first. Please let me know the best *time* to call as well as the best phone number, though - that can save a *lot* of missed calls. For advanced work, after that initial free consultation, I offer a paid "discovery" phase to do a detailed analysis *before* you commit to the full project. The discovery fee then reduces the implementation cost, so it is effectively free if you do go ahead.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Whilst I hold a first-class BSc. Hons in IT & Computing, more relevant is that I have been designing websites and helping businesses get online since 1997. Having been programming and running and promoting businesses since the early 1980s, I helped to establish NTL and Virgin Net (now Virgin Media). I also set up, mentored and ran the Which? Online Tech Support for the Consumers Association. I went freelance in 2005 *specifically* to help SMEs and startups, so can offer consulting on a wider range of digital marketing topics than most.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Web design and marketing are investments, not costs - and they vary a lot. So don't shop on price alone. As the saying goes, "If you think professionals are expensive, wait until you see what amateurs cost you". One of the most common complaints I hear about web designers is that they have "disappeared". That's usually because they were moonlighting and/or charging too little to stay in business. Business sites are not personal sites. Done properly, they pay for themselves many times over, and can be the best investment you ever make. To do that, they need to compete - and that takes strategic investment. Experience matters, because many pitfalls are invisible. A pretty site isn't automatically profitable, and what *seems* to work for others may not work for you. Experienced web designers study site stats from a wide range of businesses, so we can provide valuable perspectives on digital business than others simply can't. So get that experience on board early in your planning process. Otherwise, common mistakes will waste a lot of time and money. Finally, the secret of success is getting started. Strategies change, so get a mentor, launch early and learn as you go.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
1. How long have you been doing this *full time*? (Most cheap designers are usually either inexperienced or moonlighting - so are unlikely to be available when you need them in the future. This will limit your business and is one of the main reasons small firms feel let down by web designers.) 2. Do you provide ongoing security updates and support? (Editable sites need frequent updates to stay secure) 3. How do you help clients promote their websites? (Most do *very* little, if anything - so they don't know what features they'll need to build in to give you a real chance of success)
What are some good examples of past customers?
DogLost is the UK's largest volunteer pet rescue service, which I helped to grow to over 100 thousand members, with millions of visitors each month and a healthy ad income. That involved hand-coding a bespoke high-volume, secure community site from scratch. Festival Medical Services provides medical cover (doctors, ambulances etc.) for major events like the Reading and Glastonbury Festivals. Over the years (until they took on full-time IT staff), I built their: -- Website and membership portal -- Bespoke team management system capable of handling multiple teams with multiple team leaders, each with different rotas at various events -- Secure field triage system
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
Upgraded the Dry Boot Company's site from a basic e-commerce system to one that could handle an unlimited catalogue of products, with shipping and tax calculations. The initial discussion, analysis, implementation and migration of existing products was spread over about ten days, with further support and adjustments delivered since.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I've been an entrepreneurial designer-programmer since the 1980s (though I started off as an archaeologist, events organiser, counsellor and shop owner). So when the Internet came along, I was waiting for it, and happy to help translate the "computerspeak" for non-techies of all ages.

If people aren't sure what you offer or are confused by the site content or layout they probably won't come back. Clearly designed content, regular updates and new posts, for example, are a great way to keep engaging with them. Secondly the how - how a site actually works is a huge plus if you get
