About Lorna Milton

I have been a qualified and experienced piano and clarinet teacher for 30+ years at home and in local schools and teach beginners to grade 8, including adults. I use the ABRSM examining board for those who wish to take exams. You're never too old to learn and I teach from 6 years to …. who cares? I, myself, gained the CT ABRSM diploma in 1997. Over the years several of my students have gone on to study music at university or played professionally of which I am really proud. Adult learners are my passion although I also love teaching children and encourage them to really enjoy and explore the world of music. I offer awards, however great or small each student's achievement might be. My learning material reflects each student's ability and preference, therefore I don't stick to a set pattern. I'm always open to new ideas and look for ways to enhance lessons. For example I take videos of performances, to be shown on my monitor, and on YouTube with the parents' permission, saved as 'unlisted' and not as 'public’. I download apps to help in note reading, rhythms, scales and practising to audio recordings at different speeds. I have also produced a folder of numerous documents to hand out to help around understanding the elements of music. Every year I encourage performances at local festivals, in schools and privately. Music can be enjoyed by all if guided sensitively and with patience.

Piano Lessons
Derek P.'s review on Aug 04, 2018

I always wanted to learn to play the piano, didn’t think anyone would be interested in teaching a more senior person, not an issue with Lorna, she is able to encourage, but not pressure you, yet still achieve progress. I always feel at ease, and enjoy every lesson. Her enthusiasm, patience and desire to get you to progress is a truly wonderful attribute.

Lizzie T.'s review on Jul 30, 2018

As I child I always struggled to stay engaged in everyday activities, but somehow Lorna always managed to keep me interested in playing the clarinet (her teaching and also the fact that good practise was rewarded with a sweet after lessons!) Lorna was always so encouraging and her passion for music, her skills in teaching and her belief in each of her students always made me feel proud of what I had accomplished and the grades I had gained. Paying the clarinet never became a chore - and in my honest opinion, that’s down to how your teacher encourages you. Lorna put me forward to play solo in concerts and kept me calm and well prepped before all of my music exams. Her teaching really was second to none, and I would recommend Lorna in a heartbeat to anyone who is interested in learning!!

Lorna has been my daughters piano teacher for about 2/3 years and she has just done her grade 2 and passed. Lorna has such amazing patience and encouragement for all of her students. My daughter couldn’t have got done these grades or performed at a festival without Lorna, my daughter absolutely loves her and we would both recommend her 100% as a piano teacher. She also teaches my dad who started about 5 years ago and so that is how my daughter started. She teaches all ages and is brill x

She is a very good teacher. My son loves her and has enjoyed the piano classes. After only few months, my son is now able to play the piano with both hands. We are very impressed with his performance. We absolutely recommend her.

Lorna is an excellent teacher, with an ability to inspire students to develop their skills to the best of their ability. She is very supportive and builds confidence in students with gentle encouragement. Lorna taught me piano and music theory when I was at secondary school, and helped me to prepare for music exams, GCSE and A-Level performances, and university auditions. Under her tuition I gained life long skills in music, that I have been able to enjoy into adulthood. I would highly recommend Lorna as a music teacher.

Raluca L.'s review on Jul 23, 2018

Lorna is one of the highest quality professionals I have ever met - in the music world and not only. She has been teaching my daughter piano for three years with excellent results. She is extremely skilled and talented in her profession - has method and structure but knows how to make lessons fun! Also she is great at building relationships and playing to students' strengths. She will go to great lengths to ensure every student's individual needs are met and to provide not only knowledge and information but a lot of coaching and emotional support. I could not have made a better choice for a music teacher. Thank you for everything you're doing!

This young man of 7 years old has just taken his ABRSM Prep Test with excellent comments and played a solo and a duet recently in a local music festival. Before preparing for both, he had only had 10 lessons of which he must feel really proud. This is a little star of the future and I feel really honoured to have been his teacher. Unfortunately his family have moved and can no longer travel to me for lessons.

Lorna has been fantastic with my two sons. She has a natural ability to relate with children and make the lessons fun and enjoyable. They have grown in confidence since starting piano lessons with her and we are so pleased with their progress and achievements!

The older of Charlotte's two boys, who attends junior school, has just passed the ABRSM grade 2 with distinction. With support from his parents, encouragement and lots of fun he worked hard, determined to gain his certificate. His young brother is also a delight and will be preparing for his Prep Test soon. Both played in a local music festival in June and received great comments. I adore teaching them both.

Sue is an adult and we've worked together over the years with joy and enthusiasm. Like many adults she has insecurities but just doesn't appreciate how good she is. Therefore I keep striving to give her the confidence to achieve and enjoy the music she so loves.

Christina S.'s review on Jul 18, 2018

Lorna provides a very personal service in giving piano lessons. She quickly gets to know the type of music her students enjoy and tries to find pieces that suit the genre, while maintaining the correct level or grade. There is a relaxed atmosphere during lessons, where she will encourage, praise and offer the advice that is needed to improve. Small incentives are offered for children who have practised lots and there is a 'repertoire' award for adults who succeed in playing many pieces throughout the year. There are opportunities to take exams and enter festivals, but neither of these are mandatory; if students simply want to play for pleasure, they can do so.

Tina is a joy and enjoys all music genres, particularly upbeat music and is always determined to work until she achieves near perfection. She has been learning now for 3 years and sometimes plays to her class pupils in the school where she teaches. Tina's ultimate goal is to play in school assembly sessions and by working together, this is certainly possible.
