The hardest part of being self-employed is being only accountable to yourself. Unlike working for an employer when you have a boss who tells you what your deadlines are and you try and achieve them being self-employed is harder because you have no one outside to set you goals and times. I have all the ideas and a lot of materials to make things but setting timelines is harder on your own. Also needed advice if my ideas were money losses or not and got advice on this. Agreed for to write out my plan of work and every agreed period to be held accountable by a third party and have to explain why I did not manage to do the work and also to be congratulated on the work I have done, be set realist targets for work tasks. Also will be given advice if the work I want to undertake is possible in the time I want to complete it. I will get help in goal setting and trying to improve the income of the business every month to grow it into a full-time living. Happy to be given guidance to grow my business.

Hi, our rates are amongst the most competitive in the sector - and we offer a free intro session. What do you have to lose?
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Depending on whether a customer/client is interested in our counselling/coaching options, or business consultancy, we take the time to get to know them - and their needs. We're not in the business of wasting our clients time by telling them what their problems/issues are. Our job is to help you resolve them so whether you need help with a personal or professional problem, we're the only team that offers transformative change.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I have over 30 years experience in commercial and corporate strategic and operational planning as well as being a successful chef and business owner! I've been a counsellor and coach for over 10 years and have over 1000 hrs mixed specialism practice to back up diplomas and awards but I will continue to learn - and train.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
If they don't offer a free intro session or consultation, run a mile, and if you can't speak to the person you will be working with until you start the consulting/counselling/coaching relationship, then avoid that company!
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Lots! Ask us ANYTHING, if we can't answer, then we're not trustworthy. I always suggest asking for references that you can contact independently, and also get to know the person you'll be working with; don't be afraid to ask about their life experience as well as their qualifications and never be afraid to 'interview' them! Ask, ask ask!
What are some good examples of past customers?
From a consultancy point of view, I worked with a large ad agency recently and helped them develop their 5 year operational and strategic plan. I'm happy to say that this work has helped them survive the Covid shut down - no, I'm not physic, I just understood my clients direction of travel. On the counselling/coaching side, I've been doing a lot of work recently with former servicemen and women who have returned to civilian life with some challenges. Although its been a voluntary service as part of The Very Best You's commitment to 'giving back', I am proud to have been able to help them heal and build brighter futures.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
My projects are so varied, its hard to know where to begin! I recently delivered a large listed building fire restoration project for a private members club which turned into a far bigger project than expected! As well as the complexities of working in a 300 year old building, I was asked to review and recommend a complete overhaul of their 5 year operational and strategic plans as well as developing and launching a number of compliance related policies and procedures. I was also asked to coach their Board and Directors and help them integrate the five year plans. I'm proud to say, we landed every part of the project on time, on budget and met all areas of compliance! As for counselling/coaching - every client, whether corporate or private is different, and so are their needs so I have clients who I have been working with for many years, and some that I see in practice for a short period of time. I have a 95% success rate in relation to helping my clients improve their quality of life, career or relationships, or helping them learn to manage issues relating to substance and alcohol abuse.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I became a counsellor/coach through volunteering. I've always been the person who friends/family turn to for advice so it seemed to be a good fit - and I happen to love it. Helping someone improve their lives, their careers or overcome challenges and obstacles is a great feeling; you'd be surprised how many times I have been asked to be Godparent to the children of former patients that I have helped! As for my consultancy career, after 30 years in the corporate and third sector world, I became disillusioned with the lack of 'service' being offered by outsourcing organisations. Profit had become king, and service was just an inconvenience! My career path changed when I was invited to consult for a large charity who were struggling with not only a large move, but also with creating a service driven culture within their organisation; they had become weary of trying to maintain a clean and hygienic working environment and host large scale events without a service led culture. What started off as a 9 month contract became a 6 year relationship during which time I helped them create the kind of service led operational culture that is now the envy of the third sector. I'm still proud!
