About JQ Design

I have been a graphic designer and creative artworker for over 25 years. During that time I have worked for many high end companies employed, contracting and freelancing. I will always do my best to create work that takes the clients needs into consideration, being respectful of any existing branding and guidelines to produce a print or digital ready piece of work they are totally satisfied with. I am highly inspired by sci-fi and fantasy art but am perfectly capable of producing work that is down to earth too. I can use all the usual Adobe software packages, plus many others such as Blender 3D, Krita, Affinity: Designer, Photo and Publisher. I also have excellent, sketch, drawing, illustration and digital painting skills.

Graphic Design
Craig M.'s review on Mar 09, 2021

I have used James for multiple projects over many years and will continue doing so. James is very easy to work with, understands briefs clearly and asks good questions if more information is required. The other thing I like about James is his willingness to learn new skills. In one project we had a need for a 3D store planogram, and James too k the time to learn a new piece of software to allow us to complete the project. Highly recommended.

Photo Editing, Scanning And Restoration
Joanna Y.'s review on Feb 25, 2021

Following the design of a brilliant eye catching logo which I’m certain has been a key factor in attracting many customers, I have been very pleased with the image quality of photos edited by JQ Design. I have received lots of positive feedback whenever using the images for advertising, especially on social media and from customers calling after looking at our gallery online. Jim has always responded quickly and produced great value high quality work. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I work on a basis of charging around £35 per hour for creative work when working remotely. Consultation, Artworking and admin are charged at a lower rate depending on the work. Prices for day work vary from £100-£250 per day depending on the type of work, quantity and timelines.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
An initial free consultation to discuss what is required, turn-around time and management of expectations. During this I will listen to and consider and ideas the client may have and any existing guidelines that may need to be adhered to. Upon coming up with a plan of what is required we will agree a price and take the next steps to get the ball rolling.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
BTEC Design Courses in Adobe Creative Suite Applications. 3D Design
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Make sure to check out their previous work and portfolio to see if you like the styles they have done previously. Take into consideration that creative work is a process and takes time always apply the rule that there are three things to balance with creative/design work: Quality, Price and Time, you can always adjust one or the other of these but they will have an impact on the others. For example if you want a job doing quickly for very little money, you are going to be sacrificing the quality of the work you get. You may be able to get a good quality job for a good price but that will most likely be at the sacrifice of the time it will take as the designer will want to to this job as a when they can as they aren't making as much from it as they are from other work in their pipeline.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Maybe ask about any experience they have of similar work they have done in the past. But bear in mind someone just starting out on their own may not have this yet.
What are some good examples of past customers?
I have worked employed for 2K Games, Take-Two Interactive, Turtle Beach, Lygo International, McCann Erickson, Tenderwood, Guilbert Niceday and Kallkwik.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
Recently I designed a set of web and social assets for a video game release. I created three different concepts and finalised vertical and landscape web banners, square social media carousel tiles and a 1920x1080 asset for a social media post. All in all the job took around two and a half days.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I left Art College and got a temporary job working on Apple Mac computers in a Reprographics House. It became a permanent role once they realised they could offer out creative work. From there I advanced out into packaging design and ended up working in-house for a top games publishers. By this time the digital revolution came about and I found myself working on all manner of Marketing, PR, Social Media and Packaging for both print and digital platforms.Within these roles I have worked as Graphic Designer on logo creation, packaging, branding, guidelines, from the smallest little web banners to massive designs for Expos such as E3 and Gamescom.
