About Hugh Stimpson

The ability to play a musical instrument is both an impressive technical skill and a lifelong source of happiness. And we are all capable of learning and welcoming this joy and sense of fulfillment into our own lives. I am affiliated to the British Suzuki Society, and believe wholeheartedly in the philosophy that every child is born with exceptional musical potential and, with the right teaching and a supportive environment, he or she can become a confident and proficient musician. I work with children from as young as 3 or 4 years old, first developing a solid foundation and then progressively developing their skills. However, I also believe that you are never too old to develop new skills, and have also had great results teaching adults with a love of music who are fulfilling a long held ambition to learn to play. When I am teaching children, I want to help them develop a wide-ranging appreciation of music, not simply to learn where different keys are on a piano. I place a strong emphasis on technique as well as on overall musicality, training their ears as well as their fingers. My lessons are fun, lively and varied: it is essential that children learn to associate playing with enjoyment and stimulation. It’s also important that a one or both parents are actively involved in the learning process, sitting in during our lessons and and providing oversight and encouragement while the child practises. I have a patient and encouraging style, and ensure that every achievement or sign of progress is acknowledged and praised. Lessons are designed to be challenging, but never beyond the student’s capability, and the pace will be set by the pupil’s own learning style. I don’t place limits on the style of music we play together or the curriculum we follow; I teach both a classical repertoire as well as modern and contemporary music, and have equally good results working with students who are keen to progress through the system of graded exams and those who simply want to learn for their own fulfilment. My teaching is effective, thorough and excellent value for money; discounts are available for longer lessons, and for families seeking tuition for two or more siblings. The first step is normally a free first lesson, during which I assess the student’s current level of musical ability, their sense of tone and rhythm and establish their musical tastes, goals and interests. All of this information enables me to design a personalised programme of lessons that will be engaging, challenging and yield the best possible results. If you are considering piano lessons for you or your child, I would be very happy to welcome you to my studio. Please get in touch for more information.

Team B.'s review on Jun 28, 2019

(This review was taken via Bidvine) Hugh Stimpson was my daughters piano teacher for many years. The lessons were always enjoyable and well structured, she made very good progress but was never put under any pressure to take exams. She particularly enjoyed playing duets with Hugh. The musical pieces Hugh chose for her to work on were always a pleasure for her, chosen carefully to help her progress and to keep her inspired. She has developed a love of music and particularly the piano. - Debbie
