About Hugh Benson Music Teacher

I am a passionate about music teaching, across disciplines. I have 8 years of experience as an private practitioner and as employed by multiple institutions. I have taught in primary school, secondary school and independent music school environments. I have taught singing and piano ABRSM Grades 1-8 as well as GCSE and A-Level Edexcel and AQA syllabuses. I have led choirs and taught whole class music. I have a Teaching Diploma from ABRSM, specializing in voice. I am inspired by the desire to see people exploring the musical world and challenging themselves to achieve through their own dedication. I believe that musical education teaches much more than specialized skills: I believe that through musical education people can learn such lessons as self-motivation, dedication and commitment to goals. I think that these are life lessons that resonate through life.

Singing Lessons
Fabienne N.'s review on Sep 30, 2020

My daughter has been taking voice lessons with Hugh for the last 2 years. She has progressed so much with him. The lessons were well prepared and well structured. The voice was warmed up properly. Hugh challenged my daughter on a wide range of repertoire and introduced her to a variety of styles and genres. He is very knowledgeable on ABRSM exams and the curriculum. I felt my daughter was well prepared for her exams. Most of all, she thoroughly enjoyed her lessons!

Singing Lessons
Erin H.'s review on Sep 23, 2020

Hugh was a very knowledgeable and professional teacher. He really helped me to understand how I could get the most out of my voice and perform my piece to the best of my ability. He was very patient with me, even though I asked a lot of questions and sometimes didn't get things right every time! I would highly recommend Hugh as a teacher for students at all levels of music development, but definately for those who are looking to fine tune their voice and pieces to take advantage of his excellent music skills.

Piano Lessons
Dorothea A.'s review on Sep 18, 2020

Hugh is an excellent piano teacher who makes learning music fun while also instilling a committed approach in his students.

Music Theory Lessons
Heather A.'s review on Sep 14, 2020

Our family has known Hugh Benson for eight years. He has taught our youngest son piano during that period. He is taken Jeremy through the classical grades up to ABRSM Grade 5 Jazz piano and Grade 5 Theory. He continues to study piano with Hugh. In addition to being a good teacher, Hugh is responsible, caring and talented. I have no reservations recommending Hugh.

Piano Lessons
Russell B.'s review on Sep 13, 2020

Hugh has taught my daughter piano for six years, taking her successfully post level 3 ABRSM to passing level 8, and including one theory exam. He continues to teach her various new tunes. Over this time we have found Hugh to be: - diligent - good at motivating - dedicated - knowledgeable - having a sense of humour - punctual Hugh is thorooughly recommended.

Piano Lessons
Deborah P.'s review on Sep 13, 2020

As an adult learner I was quite nervous about starting the piano but Hugh was extremely kind and patient. His instructions were clear, and from the word go he talked to me about feeling the music and not just where to put my fingers, so the lessons are always enjoyable and very instructive. He is very diligent and professional, but is also clearly passionate about teaching and playing the piano. He has a good mix of rigour and encouragement to be expressive. Because of his patience I think he would be a great teacher for children as well as adults. I am looking forward to continuing my journey towards an enjoyable level of competence with Hugh.
