About Gentle Cutter Music

I am a professional musician and teacher, with over 25 years’ experience teaching piano and theory one-to-one and performing as a pianist and singer both in my own rights and with various bands and ensembles. In other words ‘I practice what I preach’! I teach ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), although I also qualified as a teacher with Yamaha Music School, passing their Grade 5 Theory Exam for Teachers. In all this time I have only had one experience of a pupil failing an exam; this is because I have excellent judgment and experience, entering candidates for exams only when I know they are going to be ready on the day of the exam. In terms of exams I teach the classical piano syllabus but I am also acquainted with the Board’s jazz syllabus having attended the workshop launch when this was first introduced. I am professionally qualified in both capacities: as a teacher (PGCE in secondary education teaching Music and English from Bretton Hall), and as a musician (Grades 8 in both Piano and Theory, as well as ALCM Performer’s Diploma in Piano Playing from Huddersfield, which I was awarded at age 17.) As a pianist/keyboard player I am a seasoned church and theatre pit musician. I have worked as accompanist for the internationally renowned Barnsley Youth Choir throughout its 10 year existence, as a session player for Take 2 Big Band, and am an experienced folk musician playing piano accordion for No Mean Feet Ceilidh Band and for the last few years playing keys with the Demon Barbers. I am an experienced repetiteur and accompanist, both on stage and for exams, and all in all I can offer pupils my wide-ranging all round musicianship.

Piano Lessons
Dyfrig H.'s review on Aug 24, 2020

Gareth taught music to both of my children. He is a consummate musician and allowed them to learn at their own paces and took account of their musical preferences. He was thorough and patient. One of the children went from complete beginner to passing grade 8, and is still a keen musician three years later. The other played a brass instrument, so had Gareth teaching musical theory to grade 5. Gareth was flexible, and helpful especially at exam times. He was a constant encouragement to both children as their musical ability grew. I would recommend Gareth as a teacher of piano and music theory. In the early year or two, Gareth could have improved with his organisation but this did improve over the years. It was certainly no hindrance to his ability as a teacher.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
My pricing is based on a combination of my schools rate and my music centre teaching rate, accounting for the fact that I tend to travel to my private pupils (unless they are learning online) and need to account for petrol costs and travel times between lessons. It is an ongoing rate which will only significantly change with the length of the lesson, and most pupils manage with 30 minutes up until the higher grades.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
I will offer a FREE introductory lesson with no obligations. This allows me to familiarise myself with location and home set-up (what instrument is available to practice on if any, what advice to give, what tutor material is available or needs ordering), and the pupils to familiarise themselves with me, my manner and method, basic practice requirements. Initial lessons are about determining parental and pupil expectations as well as my own. They revolve around basics of posture and positioning at the piano, the pattern of keys, and rudiments of music theory. Although I tend to teach along classical lines hand in hand with the ABRSM syllabus, I only tend to take the pupil through exams if they suit the pupil’s aptitude, needs and desires. I am happy if a pupil leaves me with no formal certificate but a lifelong love of music and playing, whether private or public. This is my main goal, to instil that love of music.
