About Erik Fauss - Violin Lessons

About me: I come from a family of educators, so teaching is in my blood. I love to unlock the unique talents of every student, and I firmly believe there is more than one path to teaching and playing music. As a freelancer I do a mix of things: performing, songwriting, teaching, recording, etc. I've played in jazz bands, folk bands, Mexican Mariachi bands, and more. I've soloed with symphonic orchestras, won competitions, and toured with chamber ensembles. My 6-7 years of teaching experience includes all levels and ages, and I derive my methodology from multiple sources (Suzuki, Kodaly color strings, ABRSM, LRAM, etc.), so I'm fairly flexible and adaptable to each student. About lessons: While I keep a strict standard of technique, I like to address the interests of the pupil as well. I believe lessons should always have a balance of work and play. I have performance and teaching experience in classical, jazz, folk, and fiddling. Learning outcomes may include: reading fluency, music theory, improvisation, advanced violin/viola technique, listening skills, sightreading, etc.

Violin Lessons
Jennifer M.'s review on Oct 27, 2020

Erik is an amazing teacher. He is very patient and willing to go at the most comfortable pace. Sessions were personalised to what my goals were in regard to my violin understanding and abilities. He demonstrates more difficult aspects of playing well, and is overall very encouraging. He takes the shame out of the scratchy noises I may initially produce. I would definitely recommend Erik for any level and any age.

Violin Lessons
Mary B.'s review on Aug 25, 2020

Erik is a brilliant violist and pedagogue. He is wonderful with children of all ages, of the highest level orchestra, chamber and solo musician and I recommend him as highly as possible. He worked as a 'String Assistant' under my auspices for Santa Barbara Strings for two years. He was a chamber music coach for various ensembles in addition to helping the viola and violin sections of our orchestra. He is well liked by all, polite, affable, incredibly positive, and a top-notch musician.

Violin Lessons
Niamh O.'s review on Aug 17, 2020

Erik is an exceptional violin tutor. He has been teaching my 7 year old daughter weekly violin for more than 2 years, and he impressively combines fun and learning for this quite tricky age level. Erik shows great skill and empathy when working with his student. And from a parent point of view, I find Erik is easy to deal with, very professional, and I am happy to highly recommend him.

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
Lessons are £45/hour (£30/half hour), but fairly negotiable. Depending on Lockdown restrictions, I can meet outside or over video chat for consultation lessons. Performance and recording projects depend on the conditions, but usually start from £75
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
I make sure to know their background and experience, their specific interests, and their commitment level. I will often start with something they have already been working on, or suggest my own method books for beginners.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I was taught with the Suzuki method, but I also have influences from external teachers and performers. Studying at the Royal Academy of Music has significantly impacted my work as well.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Understand that the teacher - student dynamic is as personal as it is businesslike. Learning music involves one's physical, mental, and emotional faculties, so it's important to choose someone you can get along with. Make sure to try a consultation lesson first.
What are some good examples of past customers?
Committed, organized, hardworking, but most importantly honest. My best students were the most open and transparent with their goals and struggles.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I began teaching in high school, tutoring at my elementary schools and accepting some younger private students. I was also hired through various other teaching organizations in California, all of which strengthened my teaching abilities as well.
