About Elaine Ambridge Music Teacher

Hi! My name’s Elaine and I am a freelance musician. I teach violin/viola as well as music theory. I’ve worked as a professional musician for the last ten years with my career spanning the classical, jazz and pop genres. I studied at the Royal College of Music for my Bachelors Degree and then gained a Masters in Music from the Royal Northern College of Music. I moved to Surrey recently and am currently working in theatre, as well as recording from home which gives me a lot of flexibility when it comes to teaching. I love teaching and understand just how important it is to have a good relationship between teacher and pupil. I know how to encourage and challenge students, while making sure lessons are fun. I’m happy to do zoom lessons as well as face to face. I’m also happy to travel for teaching within the London/Surrey regions. As well as instrumental teaching, I’m comfortable teaching music theory/sight reading/aural. I have a lot of experience with the ABRSM but am equally happy to teach for fun! The most important thing is that you enjoy and benefit from your lessons - whatever that means to you. I look forward to meeting and working with you!

Violin Lessons
Catriona P.'s review on Feb 06, 2021

Elaine is a fantastic teacher who works hard to make sure her pupils are getting the best possible musical education. My daughter has really come out of her shell since starting lessons with Elaine, and has enjoyed her lessons more than with any other teacher she's had. Highly recommended!

Violin Lessons
Kimberley B.'s review on Aug 14, 2020

As a mature student, Elaine made me feel at ease and understood my needs straight away. She offered great advice and ideas for improving my technique and progression after 20+ years of not playing regularly! I’m looking forward to our next session.

Violin Lessons
Dominic B.'s review on Jul 21, 2020

Elaine was a perfect teacher for our son who had previously struggled to engage with playing and practicing, but she approached it in such an appealing way that my son enjoyed it from the first lesson and wants to practice now. She’s also punctual and very friendly. I highly recommend Elaine!

Violin Lessons
Katie R.'s review on Jul 21, 2020

Elaine has been my teacher for the past two years and I love our lessons. She helped me gain distinction in my grade 4 last year!

Viola Lessons
Ben K.'s review on Aug 07, 2020

Elaine has been teaching my son viola for over 4 years now and we couldn’t be happier with the results. He loves his lessons and is really benefitting from learning with Elaine as he has much more drive to practice than before. We highly recommend her.

Music Theory Lessons
Ashleigh W.'s review on Jul 21, 2020

Elaine helped my son through his Grade 5 theory last year. He has struggled at school but really found an outlet through his music - we are very grateful!

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
Prices vary depending on the length of lesson and location. Example prices: 30 minutes £20 45 minutes £25 1 hour £30 These prices may vary depending on distance travelled to student etc.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
It is important to get a feel for what the student wants to get out of their lessons before beginning. It's also important to understand what level or previous knowledge the student has so that we can tailor a plan specifically to you. The most important thing for me is that you enjoy and benefit from your lessons - whatever that means to you. I will also stress that the process will require dedication from the pupil, no matter what level they are hoping to achieve. Learning a new instrument can be incredibly rewarding but it is something that will require daily practice.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I have both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music, specifically in performing. As part of both of these courses I have completed modules in one on one and group teaching. As well as these qualifications I have ABRSM Grade 8 in Violin, Piano and Voice as well as having both Grade 5 and Grade 6 Theory qualifications, giving me a vast knowledge of how the exam system works.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
It is important that you feel comfortable with your teacher. As most lessons are one on one, you have to be willing to spend half an hour/an hour in that person's company and feel that you're improving. I offer a free online or phone consultation as well as your first lesson half price.
What are some good examples of past customers?
I have taught both children and adults at beginner and advanced levels. My favourite pupils have been enthusiastic and hard working, and in return they're the ones that get the best results!
How did you first get into this line of work?
I began playing the violin at the age of 5 at the recommendation of my school music teacher. I started piano lessons at aged 8 and singing lessons aged 10. My earliest performance memory is playing the violin, dressed as a sheep in my school nativity.

I am a music teacher I have been teaching at St. Helen's School for Girls, Northwood for several years. I aim to inspire children to enjoy the music making, as learning music is not just about exam preparation – it’s about gaining a deeper understanding and expressing themselves through their music.
