What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
£30 - £50 per hour dependant on the type of job. Negotiable if contract is on-going subject to a £1000 per month retainer. Price per job (with per alteration fee of £25 applied after fulfilment of brief, unless alteration is required due to my error) options available on simpler commissions, No job is too small but I charge an absolute minimum of £100 to engage.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
This really is dependent on the customer, my approach is flexible. I find it is always best to start with a good brief followed by a good chat to see where we can take your idea. Don't worry, I am very friendly, have a wealth of experience, and have loads of handy hints and tips to put forward. I am also extremely experienced in analysing businesses and offering suggestions on routes to market, retention strategies and longevity.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
I qualified with a HND in Graphic Design in 1997 and went straight into work as an artist/artworker for a busy advertising agency. I have 20+ years working commercially most of which was spent working at senior management level at a very well known insurance company. I was involved in everything from the day-to-day management design/writing/print/storage/fulfilment/distribution to business planning, project management, future projections, budgeting, cost centres, accounts and sales scripting.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Be as clear as possible with your brief but try to be agile in your approach. Provide any ideas you have on colours, imagery or even other designs you like the style of, this will really help to get things started. A good brief is great as a starting point but great design comes from great discussions and the excitement they generate. Who knows, I may even be able to offer some suggestions that really pop, or that will save you money. A good discussion will also help to iron out any potentially costly technical issues that could crop up. If you have your heart set on a particular idea that you have, then this is also fine. I am more than happy to help you to realise your creation to the highest standard. In this industry you tend to get what you pay for. There are plenty of cheap options out there but they tend to end up being frustrating, substandard and costly in the long run. Experience and technical knowledge are key to providing a great service.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I was always good at art at school, when it came time to go to college Graphic Design seemed like the perfect career for me. I spent 5 years studying and ended up working as a Junior Mac Artist at a busy Advertising and Marketing company. I was quickly promoted and was then Head-Hunted to work as an in house designer for an Insurance Company. After 2 years I was promoted to Departmental Manager and later to the Senior Management Operations team. I learned so much about the 'business of design', but also the 'design of business', How to structure, report, analyse, identify and guide. How to interact with executives, manage ego's, resolve disputes, diplomacy and how to lead from both the front and the back. After many years I decided that I would like a bit more freedom in my life so I sat down and thought about life away from the bustling office. I realised that there was no joy in being in such a commercial environment. I saw myself working from home or in the coffee shop, working for people who were excited about their business and whom could really benefit from my experience. The last few years have been truly wonderful and I still manage to do a bit for my old company.
