About Colin Wallace Relational, Family, Mental Health, Trauma Informed Based Practice

I have also worked as a Personal Advisor delivering Information, advice and guidance to both young persons and adults. I have an NVQ IAG level qualification which has enabled me to deliver both one-to-one, group sessions and outreach casework. I have also delivered CV workshop including interview and motivational and confidence building as well as mentoring 13-24-year olds. These interventions using the ‘client centred approach’ were based on a range of issues including education, careers, jobs and training, apprenticeships, housing, health, money(benefits), leisure, and voluntary work. The psychosocial approach has enabled me to further understand client issues, to now encompass the relationship-based approach to practice. This has aided in my approach to now gain a deeper understanding of issues such as well-being and how environment plays a part in the lives of those I work with and for. I understand that relations are often built over time and at a pace the client is comfortable with, psychosocial studies have helped in that it produces a holistic view of people’s lives. A shared meaning using reflective practice often creates an understanding whether in groups or on a one-to-one basis, thus the ability to explore possibilities and create activities that the clients help formulate through their understanding of any given situation. This I believe gives meaning to the lives of clients and creates and helps build internal support systems. From which the clients can develop coping mechanisms when confronted with a vulnerable set of circumstances or it can help, as often with people today, cope with feelings of isolation and mental health issues. Understanding that non-verbal communication plays a great part of the narrative when holding sessions is, I believe key to any interaction, this includes the role of the support worker and the client. Utilising techniques such as ‘mirroring’ and being able to contain and reduce levels of anger and stress as an approach is also important. I have with my many years of group work and further understanding through Psychosocial practice learnt to foster a safe, inclusive and non-judgemental environment for client to express themselves, engaging in successful meetings and practices across generational divides.
