What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
Providing that sufficient details are given, project estimates are free with initial consultation. I do offer discounts but this is variable depending on scope of works. Design fees are calculated on the basis of my time and expertise at an hourly rate. This also works out as a half day cost (up to 4 hrs) or a full day rate (up to 8 hrs). I offer package pricing for small, medium and large scale projects. For more details please direct message me via my contact page.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Conversation with the customer about their needs, really understanding what it is they wish to achieve with their space. This is usually online video or over the phone. Based on listening to this information I then go through a process of sitting down with the customer face to face and working out a plan so I can then come back to the customer with
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Graduated from The Glasgow School Of Art in Art. Worked as a designer since setting up my own company in 2012.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Despite the specifics of certain projects, it's really helpful to remain open minded and prepared for whatever changes you wish to adapt or improve. For me, the best results for design projects come from a shared understanding of the end goals - conversations throughout the process from start to finish.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
I would say to have prepared some thinking on:
- What inspired them to do the project in the first place? Is it a practical decision or a different aesthetic / or both?
- Information on a realistic budget? (depending on the project perhaps think about materials/fixtures fittings etc with a separate design fee for the work. This really helps as a guide)
- What particular feature or style/attitude of previous work appealed to their interests that sparked an interest in commissioning new services bespoke to them?
- Information of samples or image sources? This helps the designer to guide a design vision with early stage conversations.
- A good idea of expected timescales are extremely helpful - from start time to completion of the project.
What are some good examples of past customers?
- I've worked with residential / private home owners who have commissioned me to design bespoke furnishings which are completely unique to them as people and tell the story of their home environment.
- I've worked with other design companies to introduce new ways of thinking on a product material - for example, a tiled floor commission for an international trade exhibition.
- My work has been purchased by specialist collectors and included in private design exhibitions.
- Stylists and other leading interior design agencies have selected my designs to feature in their projects. Examples include one of a kind textiles and furniture items.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
Much of my work is based on WOM which leads to new commissions. I was approached by a luxury perfume brand to help them realise how to design a perfume bottle for a new launch. This was a product design brief as the company had seen previous work I'd completed working with a glassmaker. The scope for this project was to produce a prototype bottle which had to house different 'sacred' limited edition elements inside the vessel. The bottles were then refined and produced to work with the clients specifications. I helped them research and define this unique design for their launch in London.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I initially trained as an artist so the transition to the design industry was a gradual but complementary in terms of my skills and interests. I'd say I'm primarily a visual designer working with home / interior products. My main focus is exploring collage work in my designs - creating experiences for clients that weave a personal narrative and story. For me this gives increased value and integrity, pushing me in a direction to think beyond my capabilities.
