About Christopher Bland Music

Christopher Bland is a highly in demand musician and educator based in North London. He teaches Piano, Flute, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Keyboards, Composition, Music Theory and Audio Production. He has taught and delivered workshops for numerous prestigious institutions, including the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Leeds College of Music, Warwick School, Richmond House School, Yamaha, Falmouth University, Aberystwyth University and works as an ambassador for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Christopher is fully DBS checked, and additionally has attained ABRSM Grade 8 in both Piano and Flute. Over lockdown, Christopher has invested in a state of the art Zoom teaching set up, featuring double camera angles and professional lighting. The set up is also fully integrated with OBS, Sibelius, Logic and Spotify. Christopher's teaching methods are both fun and thorough, placing equal importance on composition, improvising, musical understanding and performing ability. His goals as a teacher are to evoke creativity, enthusiasm and confidence in each of his students while improving their technical and musical ability. He caters to both young beginners learning an instrument for the first time, intermediate students looking to pass a graded exam or learn their favourite songs, and advanced students preparing themselves to study at university and beyond. Christopher specialises in jazz, classical and pop genres. He graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2015, receiving the highest piano recital mark and as a result, Christopher was awarded an additional scholarship from the Global Music Foundation to study in Certaldo, Italy. After embarking on a successful performing and teaching career in Leeds, he moved to London in 2018 to pursue postgraduate study, and in 2020 he completed his Masters in Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with Distinction, where he now works as an accompanist and vocal coach. He has performed at several prestigious venues and events throughout the country including Ronnie Scotts, Steinway Hall, The Barbican and Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho. Testimonials: "Christopher is a very good and experienced teacher perfect for any student level, beginner, intermediate, or pro; you will always learn something. Clear and patient, Christopher always provides useful information in a way you can understand no matter how simple or complex. Double camera set-up makes it easy to follow what notes he is playing and makes sure you can follow along. A great knowledge of music means he can always help to recommend new artists and albums for inspiration with your playing. Very friendly and easy to get on with, overall a great teacher." - Harry (adult student) "Chris Bland is one of the best members of staff I have ever had. He is completely conscientious, reliable and utterly professional. Unlike a lot of people, he gets his head around the whole job and thinks for himself and acts accordingly to ensure that whatever he is doing has the very best outcome he can achieve. He works superbly in teams and very often acted as my Deputy. He is very versatile; teaching on a 1:1 basis, also class teaching, taking large rehearsals of 100+ and he has stepped in at the last minute to do all sorts of jobs. He has worked tirelessly to improve his pedagogy and psychological approach to teaching and has experience of teaching a very wide range of pupils from ages as young as 3. Chris gave me regular updates about the progression of his students, discussing alternative teaching methods to motivate students, particularly during examination preparation. His results were always outstanding. Chris also took on some very difficult children with autism, specific learning disabilities and dyspraxia and dyslexia. He would be the person who would accept a child that other teachers found too difficult to manage long term. Although Chris is an outstanding performer, he really is an outstanding teacher. Wise beyond his years and truly passionate about the learning paths of his students. Chris’s time keeping was excellent and he is a great communicator. His report writing was extremely personal, detailed and showed that he knew his students inside out.  Chris was very well liked by all at school and the children, parents and other staff. I cannot list all the fantastic attributes of Chris Bland, but he will be a major asset to any establishment in which he works. He is a passionate and committed musician, teacher and person of a calibre which is rare to find. (Having done a lot of interviewing in the last year, I did not come across any person of any age or experience with the calibre of teaching that Chris has)." - Victoria Lloyd (Director of Music, Richmond House School)

Piano Lessons
Theo C.'s review on Mar 16, 2021

Chris is a great teacher. He was really great at narrowing in on areas I could improve, and is very good at providing recommended listening to show concepts that we were studying in action. A really nice mix of exploring what you’re personally interested in and pushing you out of your comfort zone. He explains theory concepts really clearly and helps you get the most out of your practice time outside of the lessons. He’s also just a lovely guy, I highly recommend him!

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
5% discount for block booking 5 lessons, 10% for block booking 10 lessons and 15% for block booking 15 lessons.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Before the lesson we will discuss what you are interested in working on and what music you listen to, and I will propose a few avenues that are popular with my other students based on your responses, then going into the first lesson I can provide or suggest additional resources to aid with your lessons based on your ability and interests.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Distinction/1st, MPerf/MMus from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama 2:1 BA(hons) Music (Jazz) from Leeds Conservatoire (formerly Leeds College of Music) Scholarship to study at the Global Music Foundation Grade 8 Piano and Flute
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Look for a tutor with a thorough knowledge of all aspects of music - too many students play pieces from rote and bypass the challenge of learning the music. They miss out on so much fun and knowledge on the journey in the quick rushed pursuit of grades. I make sure all my lessons are both thorough and fun, aspiring to improve all aspects of a students musicianship.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
What music interests them, what they wish to get out of studying music, whether they wish to pursue graded exams on the journey or are willing to take a more bespoke tailor-made approach with their studies.
What are some good examples of past customers?
Patient, willing to try new styles or avenues of music that other teachers might have circumvented.
Describe a recent project that went well. Scope? How long did it take?
“A few years ago, you started teaching our daughter the piano. Not only were you incredibly skilled, but you were kind, patient, energised and full of laughter.  From day one she was hooked, she thrived and she has never looked back. You quickly saw her enthusiasm, and within a few months, had started to teach her skills on the piano, that even after many years of my piano lessons way back when, I had never known.  With our permission, you set up a Spotify account and this marked the beginning of not only her, but in fact, the whole family's education in all things Jazz - something that we, as a not particularly musical family, had not really taken much interest in beforehand. You are also someone who sees a bigger picture - you noticed some scholarships going on for young players at Leeds Conservatoire (formally Leeds College of Music) , and with your encouragement, we applied, our daughter was accepted, enrolled, and came home with, of all things, a Double Bass! Three years on this too is the love of her life and compliments all that she does on the piano." Testimonial of one of my students by her mother, Claire Corley.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I started teaching during my undergraduate studies at Leeds College of Music, providing both private lessons and working as a peripatetic teacher at several schools in Leeds, Bradford and the surrounding areas of West Yorkshire.
