About Carla Jourdan

For 3 years, I’ve been teaching students from beginner to advanced level, children as well as adults. I have been training students for the ABRSM grades for classical piano as well as for the theory grades. Having studied at the conservatoire, I have developed a clear method of practice and would help my students to learn and improve quickly as well as making their practice at home as efficient as possible. I adapt my lessons to each individual as every student has a different level, different aims and pace at which they learn. Most of the time I organise my lessons in 2 parts: the 1st half of the lesson is focused on theory and reading (reading notes and clapping rhythm, practicing scales to encourage good hand position, precision, speed and technique). The 2nd half is focused on applying the theory into the practice and learning a piece. Whether it's for classical or contemporary music, I go through how to practice it at home and give tips and tricks to learn the piece as quickly and efficiently as possible. I want to make sure my students are learning how to be a good musician as well as learning how to be a good pianist and try to make my lessons as full and rich as possible. For those who are comfortable with rhythm and note reading, I like to do some ear training exercises to eventually get them to play recordings and pieces by ear. For those interested in contemporary music we would go through topics such as how to accompany a singer, how to play with a band and follow a drummer. Whether you want to learn classical or contemporary music, I will vary and adapt the contents of my lessons to make sure you're enjoying the lessons, keep being challenged and keep learning new things. I recently opened some intensive piano workshops where I'm offering a package of a whole week of lessons. This package includes 7 lessons of one hour each over the course of a week. This workshop is the best way to improve noticeably in a short period of time with me helping you in your daily practice. Contrary to weekly lessons where you would practice at home and then present me your homework at the end of the week, this program allows you to have your usual personal practice with me so you learn to practice correctly and therefore avoid wasting your time or taking the wrong direction during these sessions. A bit about me, I started playing piano at 8 years old and studied in a classical music school for 12 years before graduating from the conservatoire. I then decided to learn contemporary music, r'n'b, funk and jazz. In 2015 I moved to London to study jazz and contemporary music at one of the finest music Universities in the UK. I graduated 2 years ago and obtained a BMus degree in Music Performance and Production. Outside of teaching I am a songwriter and performer. I perform solo, singing and playing piano and play for other artists as well as songwriting, composing and recording.

Piano Lessons
Grant D.'s review on May 20, 2020

Carla has been an invaluable find for a complete beginner like myself, resulting in advancing far quicker and tackling much harder stuff in a very short timeframe than I would have even dreamed of attempting otherwise . She is very patient and understanding (a relief for nervous adult beginners like myself) and has introduced me to a huge range of learning experiences in music theory beyond just pecking away at the keys such as rthythm & ear training etc Highly recommended.

Elisabetta G.'s review on Feb 24, 2020

I love studying music with Carla, she is a wonderful teacher! She explains theory in a very effective way, she offers very good exercises and she is very thorough in covering all you have to know to feel that you are progressing and creating a solid knowledge. She is also very successful in teaching practice especially to a person that is not so young as I am. With her, you feel that she offers you the right way to learn music! I highly recommend Carla, I am really delighted that I chose her!

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I teach one to one lessons for £40 an hour if I travel to the student’s place. For online lessons it’s £35 an hour and £30 for 45minutes. To avoid last minute cancellations I prefer my student to pay for 4 lessons in advance. 24h notice minimum is required if they want to cancel a lesson so we can reschedule. If the lesson is cancelled with less than 24h notice, no refund will be issued and the student will be charged for the lesson.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
The first thing would be to check on what aims and goals my student would want to achieve (wether is learning classical or contemporary music). We would start with note reading and I will ask them to read something for me or explain them how reading music works (different clefs for each hands, what written music looks like and what the symbols means). Then we will do the same with reading and clapping rhythms (I will explain how time divisions works and introduce them to the music terms and language). I will then ask them to play a C Major scale and go through fingering and hand position. Then we’ll move on to a piece adapted to their levels and aims.
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
I personally would think hiring someone with teaching experience aswell as performing experience would be more interesting. Having a teacher who is an active musician aswell as a teacher can give a better perspective of the music world. Playing music can be intimidating at first and developing confidence is a big part of the journey so having a teacher who knows about how to control their stress mainly from performing experience can be a big help for the student as well as other tips performers would have (like learning pieces faster and memorising a set list etc ...)
What are some good examples of past customers?
Students profile varies a lot. Some start with already a good background and some are complete beginners. All of my best students were those who were practicing regardless of their levels. The practice at home is 90% of the improvement and teaching students who improve every week because of their daily practice is definitely the most enjoyable lessons and best experiences. Seing my students proud of what they achieve and seing them improve is the most satisfying result a teacher could get.
How did you first get into this line of work?
I started teaching piano when I was 17 years old, right after getting my classical music diploma in France. My mum being a piano teacher in the conservatoire got me into teaching at the beginning. Back then I was only teaching children and teenagers. I now teach mainly adults but still teach younger students too.
