Meet Calum

I’m Calum - and I teach guitar! As an entirely self-taught musician, who has a passion for teaching, I believe that anyone can play guitar with the right help and encouragement. If you are a total beginner, or you’ve got the basics down but want to take your playing to the next level, I can help! My experience as a musician and a music teacher includes: - Grade 6 in Classical Guitar; - teaching hundreds of beginner, intermediate, and advanced guitar to boys and girls from the ages of 8 to 18 years old; - playing guitar in the pit orchestra in amateur productions of musicals such as Legally Blonde, In The Heights, Thirteen, Little Shop of Horrors, and Saturday Night Fever; - playing electric bass in a blues and soul covers band; and - a strong ear that allows to me learn and transcribe songs without the use of tabs or sheet music. So whether you want to learn chords, scales, music theory, work on your right and left-hand technique, do some ear training - or you just want to learn your favourite songs - I would love to help! Follow me on Instagram to see a snapshot of my playing (and some of my adventures in cooking). Don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Calum is a fantastic teacher! I worked alongside Calum and his ability to engage with students, clearly explain theory and put it in to practice and his fun personality makes learning so easy! From beginners to advanced learners, he can do it all!

Calum is a fantastic guitar teacher and highly personable with a deep knowledge of theory as well as a broad interest in virtually all genres of music. As a beginner, he was fantastic at breaking down the lessons into bite-size pieces making the lessons easy to digest and understand. I cannot recommend him enough.

Calum was extremely helpful in improving my technique, I've always struggled with down picking and some of my favourite songs I've always wanted to learn use that technique a lot. The way Calum broke down the technique has greatly helped me and I'm well on my way to playing those songs. If there is anything I struggle with when playing the guitar, Calum is the first person I go to for advice.

Calum worked for me at a Summer Camp in New York State teaching guitar and bands to children ages 7 to 17. He became one of my most trusted staff members because of his knowledge of music, his ability to share that knowledge with students, and his caring way of working with children of diverse backgrounds. Calum is highly organized and a consummate professional.

Callum is an excellent teacher. He is incredibly friendly and patient and helped me stay motivated with the lessons, even when I would hit roadblocks in my prgression. He is excellent in breaking down more complex theory and and making it easy to understand for a beginner/intermediate student. I could not recommend him any more highly!! He's also just a fun person to work with :)

Questions & answers

What should customers know about your pricing? (E.g. estimates, discounts, fees, package pricing)
I’m always happy to negotiate.
What process do you go through when starting with a new customer?
Step 1 is always to meet and have a chat. This is to get a feel for what motivates you, where your skill level is currently and where you would like it to be, what motivates you to pick up and play, what your goals are, and think about where to focus. Once we are on the same page we can start the hard (but fun) work to take your playing to the next level.
What education or training is most relevant to your work?
Several years of scars and learning things the hard way as a self-taught musician, I tripped over every hurdle so hopefully you don’t have to! My only formal credential is a Grade 6 in Classical Guitar. My list of informal credentials is quite a bit longer! I have extensive experience of: - teaching individuals of all levels; - teaching groups of all levels; - playing in the pit orchestras in amateur productions of several musicals; - regularly learning and transcribing music by ear; and - playing in bands (both local gigging bands and bands formed for educational purposes).
Do you have tips or advice for someone hiring a pro in your line of work?
Picking the right teacher can make all the difference in the world, especially as a beginner. It’s about more than just relaying information (which is all out there for free already), it’s about finding someone who can guide you through to the next step of your journey and who understands you and what you’re looking to get out of playing music.
What questions should customers have ready before speaking to pros about their project?
Do I know my goals? Do I know what motivates me to learn? Do I have a clear expectation of what I’m looking for from a teacher?
How did you first get into this line of work?
A pure passion project - teaching and music have always came naturally to me. My first real experience of teaching was during my time at university. My summer job throughout my degree was to be a music teacher at a performing arts summer camp in the USA, a job I did for 4 summers in a row. My job there was to teach, learn, and play music with all ages and skill levels.
