What Is a Nutritionist?
Everywhere you look today people are touting the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. Almost every magazine and health website will tell you what you need to eat to be healthy.
It is easy to get confused when bombarded with all this information. How do you know if the information is accurate? Who do you believe when their advice contradicts? It can get confusing trying to sort out your diet!
That is where a nutritionist can come in handy. They are trained to tell you how to eat healthier. They can also help you come up with a plan no matter your lifestyle!
Who Were the First Nutritionists?
Elsie Widdowson and Professor Robert McCance developed nutrition science in the mid-1900s. Together, they essentially founded our modern understanding of nutrition.
In 1940 Widdowson and McCance published The Composition of Foods. This book described the results of their study on the effect of food on health. Today it is a key part of nutrition studies.
During the Second World War, their research influenced the UK’s rationing policies. Their work helped people learn how to make nutritious meals. This was beneficial during the Second World War when rationing led to food restrictions.
Without their dedication, we would not know as much about nutrition as we do today!
Where Do They Work?
Nutritionists work in many different locations. Their workplace is primarily determined by their own preferences and job availability.
Some of the places they work include:
Nutritionists work at both local and national levels of government. When working for the government their job is to create public health programs. These programs inform public health education and help the government develop policies. That way the government is able to provide the public with accurate nutrition information.
There are two main places that they can work in education. Some teach future nutritionists in colleges and universities while others choose to focus on research.
The main job of a researcher is to study diet and health. Researchers are constantly discovering new things about the way food can affect our health. Some researchers also share their information through media interviews with television stations and newspapers. What they learn teaches us more about our eating habits!
Outside of education and the government, many also choose to work for private businesses.
Businesses hire nutritionists to make sure their company meets health standards. For a food-related business, this is a must! They can help make sure these companies are on the right track. This also helps to ensure that a company’s health claims are backed by nutrition science.
Some also work for wellness businesses. This could mean working at a gym or a holistic living company. These nutritionists focus on helping their clients live healthy lifestyles.

Non-Government Organisations (NGOs)
Nutritionists who work for NGOs are often required to travel. One nutritionist interviewed by The Guardian had worked across the world! During her career, she travelled to Asia, Central America and Africa to help locals improve their nutrition. She also helped them develop education programs on healthy eating. In the latter part of her career, she found an advisory position. This allowed her to live at home but she still travelled regularly to support in-field teams.
Many are also self-employed. Self-employed nutritionists offer advice to their own clients.
Sometimes they share office space with others to pool their resources. Still, some prefer to work entirely on their own. In this case, they may own their own practice or travel to meet clients.
Do you have mobility issues? A nutritionist who can travel to you could be a great solution!

There are many ways that they can benefit you! As the age-old saying goes ‘you are what you eat.’ So, they can have a big impact on your life.
Here are some of the ways they can help improve your lifestyle:
Eating healthy is a key part of weight loss. They can work with you to create a meal plan that will help you lose weight. That way you can get all the benefits of a healthy diet without feeling like you are missing something.
Are you eating too much or too little? Are you eating the right food for your body? These can be difficult questions to answer. Even if you think you are eating healthy now, you may not be getting all the nutrients you need. They will help you determine what your body needs to lead a balanced life.
If you aren’t eating the right amount or the right foods you can end up feeling tired and lethargic. With a balanced diet, you can regain your energy!
Who Can Become a Nutritionist?
There is currently no legal requirements for nutritionists in the UK to register. This means that some treat patients without registering. However, they do have an official body which governs them. This is known as the Association for Nutrition (AfN). They can voluntarily register with the AfN to demonstrate their qualifications.
There are five different specialisations in nutrition recognised by the AfN:
- Nutrition science
- Public health
- Sports and exercise
- Animal nutrition
Although there is no legal need to register with the AfN it is still respected in the health community. To register with the AfN, they must prove they have taken a three or four-year undergraduate degree in nutrition science. They are also eligible if they have taken a one-year postgraduate course in an AfN approved program. To register they must also have three years of applied experience.
So, this means that before they can register, they must prove they have received the proper education and have work experience.
Once they have registered with the AfN they can use the letters RNutr after their name to show their qualifications.

Are They Different from Dietitians?
Although both nutritionists and dietitians help you balance your diet, they are different. They have different education and regulations. There is no legal requirement for nutritionists to register. Yet dietitians cannot practise without registering.
Dietitians also attend different education programs. This means that they have been trained to advise patients on how to treat specific illnesses with dietary plans. On the other hand, nutritionists are trained to help you create the most balanced diet for your lifestyle.
If you are looking to balance your diet, a nutritionist is an ideal solution!
