What is Turf?

Laying turf can instantly transform your bare or underwhelming yard into a vibrant and green lawn! Delivered to you in rolls, turf is grass that has already been planted and growing for some time. This means its roots are strong and ready to tackle the task of growing out in the real world.

You also won’t have to worry about dealing with the weeds that sometimes grow alongside seed. Turf gives you beautiful grass that has been carefully cultivated for the best results.

It’s especially popular with golf courses since the stalks of grass grow closely together and make for a stronger surface. This can prove it to be the best choice for a yard that is going to be the playground for kids or pets. You’ll know it can stand up to the daily wear it’s sure to receive underneath those feet and paws!

When you choose turf, you get the great look of healthy grass right away. Although it is more expensive than the seed option, you don’t have to wait. And with summer on the horizon, you may not want to do that

Of course, turf isn’t just real grass. It also comes in a variety known as artificial turf. This can be an intriguing idea, especially if you hate mowing or fertilizing your lawn. So read on for more information as to which is the best type for your needs.

Is Artificial Turf or Natural Turf Best?

Before you start sorting out how to lay turf on your lawn, you’ll need to choose which type of turf you plan to lay. While both types of turf make for a beautiful lawn, there are some differences between these options. Only you will know which is the best choice. But unless you’ve already weighed out the pros and cons, you’ll want to consider both kinds of turf before you make your decision.

Benefits of Artificial Turf

Artificial turf is best known for finding a home in sports arenas that require a consistent surface that won’t crack under pressure. But over the years, it has become a popular option for homes or businesses – especially when real grass is not an option! Artificial turf looks just like the real thing. Plus, it always stays green, while natural turf, on the other hand, is subject to the whims of sun and rain.

Artificial turf won’t ever need mowing or feeding either. This makes it an eco-friendly option since you are cutting down on water waste and energy. And some artificial turf brands are made out of recycled materials so you know that you are giving back to the environment with your new lawn.

Drawbacks of Artificial Turf

Artificial turf is, of course, made out of plastic. This can be a turnoff for some, especially if you are looking for a more natural feel outdoors. It’s also been found to soak up the heat on sunny days and could get rather hot underfoot! Plus, it is more expensive per square meter than natural turf.

Benefits of Natural Turf

There’s nothing quite like the look of a healthy green lawn. With natural turf, you’ll also be able to feel the difference. You can take off your shoes and enjoy the feel of soft grass underfoot. And if you enjoy spending time outdoors, taking care of your yard will be a pleasure

You’ll also have the satisfaction of watching it grow and thrive. Like any plant, natural turf will reduce CO2 in the air and replace it with the oxygen we need to breathe. This makes it a truly green option!

Drawbacks of Natural Turf

With a living thing like a natural lawn, there’s no guarantee it will survive. It will require care and maintenance to ensure it looks its best and stays green. Mowing, watering, and feeding is all necessary to make your lawn look its best. The upkeep of your natural turf can also have an impact on the planet with emissions, energy usage, and even pollutants. While you can make the choice for a more natural surface, there are the additional costs of the supplies to consider before selecting natural turf.

How to Lay Turf in 8 Steps

Now that you’ve chosen the right turf for your lawn, you’re all set to learn how to lay turf!
It’s best to lay your turf in the autumn or spring when the ground is not too wet. The weather in these seasons requires less mowing, allowing you to leave your newly-laid turf alone to allow it to grow roots. Just remember that if the season is dry, you’ll need to water your turf to keep the soil moist and best-suited for rooting.

  1. You’ll first want to gather accurate measurements of the area you plan to cover with turf. This way, you’ll be able to order the correct amount of turf – with a bit extra to fit around any curves in your lawn, or 5% more than your total square metres. Your turf supplier can help you select the right type to suit your needs: sunlight or shade, lawn use, or hardiness zone.
    • Tip: Set aside time so you are ready to lay your turf the day it’s delivered.
  2. Till up your ground so it is loose to about 16 cm deep. Remove any rocks or stones that come up with the best results with your turf. Prepare your soil with organic matter and fertilizer so it is the perfect foundation for your turf to grow.
  3. Next, your soil foundation needs to be level. Use a rake to even your surface, making sure it is low enough to allow your turf to rest comfortably and at the right height for your new lawn. This is usually about 2 to 3 cm, but you can inquire with your turf supplier about your turf’s height before you start.
  4. Water your soil well as it needs to be moist before installation. Plan to start about two days before your turf deliver to ensure you have the proper time to prepare.
  5. Unroll your turf, starting at a straight edge. A fence, patio, or driveway will give you the straight edge you need for the best results. Once your first roll is laid, lay the next roll at the end. You’ll want to work with one roll at a time in a way that keeps you from walking on your turf as much as possible. Pat it flat to the soil beneath so it is smooth.
  6. Finish one row before working on the next. You’ll want to offset your joins (like laying bricks) for the best results. You can cut turf using a carpet knife quite easily to create pieces in the correct length.
    • Tip: As you work, make sure each roll of turf is snug so it will grow together as a solid lawn.
  7. Use a lawn edge to cut along any curves. You can use a hose to follow the line of the curve to help you cut it neatly.
  8. For the final touches, use a lawn roller to ensure your turf is firmly set against the soil beneath. This is key for establishing the roots it needs to survive. Keep foot traffic to a minimum during the delicate rooting stage over the next few weeks. Water your turf after installation, and every day after to encourage rooting for the best looking lawn in the future. That’s it! Now you’ve learnt all about how to lay turf and are set to begin enjoying your lawn.
