The microwave might be handy but the inside can be covered in remnants which are a nightmare to scrub off.

Forget hours of hard labour. Place some lemon halves in water and microwave until the water boils. Switch off the microwave and leave the water and lemon to sit inside for about a minute. Remove the water, take a cloth and you’ll find that the mucky residue just wipes away.

Don’t try to remove sticky residue from around the blades by hand. All you need to do is fill it with warm water and add some washing up liquid. Give it a quick whizz around in the blender, empty out and rinse through with clean water. Hey presto! One clean blender ready for use.

Everyone at some point has experienced the horror of seeing that mystery stain. It appears to have arrived out of nowhere and refuses to go.

Give it a good squirting with a combination of two parts water and one part white vinegar. Lay a damp cloth over the surface. Take a hot iron (steam setting) and press for about 30 seconds. Repeat if needed. Begone foul spot, begone!

How to clean an oven step by step

The first step to properly cleaning out your oven is to gather all your essential supplies. Read the full list below to make sure you have all the materials you need before you get started!

Essential Oven Cleaning Supplies:

  • A good quality cleaner. There are several choices here:
    • Store-bought oven cleaners: These are the fastest and easiest solution to remove grime and grease from your oven. The drawback is that they can be caustic so you should consider a different method if you are worried about using chemicals or just want a natural approach.
    • Baking soda and water: This handy little DIY method is great for getting rid of stubborn buildup. The drawback is that you need to leave the mixture overnight, so it’s not an instant solution.
  • Rubber cleaning gloves. Find heavy-duty gloves to keep your skin safe, especially when using harsh chemicals.
  • Paper towels and old newspapers. These can help protect the area around your oven and catch anything that might drip during cleaning.
  • Damp cloth rags. These are great for cleaning the grime off after applying the cleaner.
  • Scouring pumice or microfiber sponge. This will help you to tackle large amounts of buildup.

1. Tomato Sauce

Not the worst on the list by far, but tomato sauce on a white carpet is far from ideal. Scrape off the excess ketchup, soak the stain in water and cleaning product as soon as you can. If you follow these steps, the ketchup should clear up in no time.

2. Mustard

Yellow isn’t as dramatic as red, but mustard can act as a dye and yellow is an unpleasant colour for a stain. As before, scrape and soak. Just be aware that you may have to use a spot cleaner or something stronger than your standard solution.

3. Gum

A substance that causes instant panic but actually isn’t as bad as first supposed. Put ice cubes on the gum to harden it, then scrape it off. Use white vinegar to dissolve any leftovers and then finish off with cleaning solution.

4. Chocolate

It’s dark in colour and can be even trickier if the chocolate is smeared or melted into the carpet. As always, it’s important to act fast. Use the scraping method to get rid of what you can. With whatever’s left, use surgical spirit to dissolve the fat and follow up with a carpet shampoo.

Peanut Butter

5. Peanut Butter

It may be delicious, but it’s problematic when it comes to carpet stains due to it being greasy. As usual, scrape away as much of the stain as possible and speed is again, key. Use a stronger carpet cleaning solution, with water as hot as you can get.
